Gentleman does anyone have an Early Horster Slant with the initial production crossguard they could post for everyone to Gander at. I suspect a few may be residing in England Big Grin

I have two with the initial horster x guard but neither has a slant grip. The only horster I have with a slant grip is sporting a WKC x guard.
This one is bench marked 14 and pre dates Horster having their own unique guard.

Discussed here Horster`s

I would also like to see a Horster slant with initial x guard!

Landser thanks I should have said Horster with initial production crossguards! You have a marvelous collection. These are very hard to find.

Tom, you did say initial Horster but I do not recall having seen one with a slanted grip. I guess they must be out there though and I would also like to see it.

Tom:

I have never seen the Horster associated initial guard on a slant gripped Horster. Even if I were to see one, I would believe the WKC type guard that Lanser has is earlier. Unless, some other guard eventually makes an appearance, I will believe that the initial production guards for Horster were made by WKC. I have seen exactly 4 of them (WKC guarded slants) over the years, and no slant gripped daggers with the Horster associated guard. I'm not aware of any evidence that the Horster asociated guard was even made by Horster. You see on a lot of armies other than Horster, as you well know.

Ford thanks-What other makers have you seen the Early Horster associated guard on? I personally have only seen it on a Holler that I shared with you. This guard seems to be super hard to find!

Hello,

I'll see if I can help narrow things down a little bit on this one. Here are some photos of my #40 slant grip Horster.

Doug,
Gorgeous Horster's and your 45 is the first slant grip I have seen married with the Horster 1st crossguard.
I wonder if that means that the numbered Horsters from 1-45 all utilized the WKC 1st and the numbers after 45 on slant gripped daggers, the Horster 1st?. It would be interesting to see another example post number 45.

It is also an indication of exactly how scarce this pattern is fitted with the WKC 1st?.

The problem being there are so few examples around.

G.Weyersburg also used the Horster 1st although I am not sure if the fittings are numbered.

Just noticed, even the pommels are numbered on your Horster's, what a great touch !.

Great pieces Doug, I guess you may have noticed that they are one of my favourites Smile Like Degens this is the first I have seen of the Horster guard with a slant grip. I do not believe they could have made many before switching to the B grip. Those 2 daggers are just great!!

I think we now have a good measure of how scarce the Horster with WKC guard is. Neither are by any means an easy find.

I have said I was going to stop posting photos until I take some decent shots, but I'll make a small exception here. These photos were taken years ago with a poor camera. The pommel is frozen on, so we're not allowd to gaze at the numbers inside, but I was able to see the number 25 under the washer. It is of course the Early WKC version.

At some point I'll provide better photos. The scabbard bands are heavily beveled, like an initial production Eickhorn.

It has the early logo. Again, I wish the photos were sharper.

Doug: I had no idea these had matching numbers. I don't like to mess with the washers too much, but after seeing your photos, I knew it was worth the risk.

Waoh, Henrik, that is a beauty. Can you please post a clear close up of the crossguard eagle, it looks like a WKC 1st from what I can see.
Can you get a peek under the blade leather buffer to see if the crossguard is numbered?
Do not try to force its takedown especially with that crack to the grip.

Here is one I just added, early tapered tang blade but the non-slant slightly later Horster in house config.
