German beechwood. And most, if not all Hacos were varnished.

I see no traces of any varnish remaining on the grip so you can only speculate. Either it was removed or it never had any.

Ok, it must have been my computer at work because there I wasn't able to see the picture. Now I do (at home).
Nice HACO SA dagger you have there. As far as I can see I can't see no remains of varnish on the grip.

thank you.

it's normal that no varnish on the grip ? it's a mistake to believe that varnish is a norm (obligation) ?

Some daggers had varnish on their grips but I don't think it was an obligation to have it on there. All my daggers are "varnish free." A friend of mine has one SA dagger in his collection from which the grip has a coat of varnish on it.

I suspect that varnish was not factory applied.
Any varnish or remains of such were added after the factory.

Drimmer17, it seems that some of the makers put varnish on the grip.

Agreed some did.
With some study you can come to know what to expect from given makers. Armed with this info you can more confidently buy original unmessed with examples.
In my room party after a long day buying daggers at shows we tip a few diet Pepsi's grin and play "guess the maker" on SA's and other daggers before pulling the blade. You would be amazed and how many people get right! smile
Wanna study up?
I think we are up over 200 SA's in the archive now...

Diet Pepsi...was that what it was?

Then why the headache the day after?

John et al. I spent years studying alcohol and the day after effect and I tell you it is the carbonation in the sodas that does it.
