Most WWII era Lugers had letter codes byf, S/42 ect. Are you sure the 4 digit serial number with the letters hu are not KU?

I'm not sure anyone knows. There are some floating around with "ku", but I've heard several theories about what it may mean.

The probable meaning of ku is Kummerer substandard or missized. The KU lugers were assembled for the Luftwaffe from left over and sub standard Mauser parts. All of these lugers are byf code,42code,or s/42 code and are all dated 41. All of the known lugers range in the byf code 41 date, serial numbers range 146ku-3020ku and ku3563-ku4239 estimated production 2,700 42code,date41 serial number range 2780ku-3103ku ,ku3112-ku4691 estimated production 2,300. s/42code,date 41 serial number range ku3744-ku4346 estimated production 25 As you can see the ku was both a prefix or suffix. The ku will be on the left receiver side and on the front frame. The luftwaffe proof will be on left side of the barrel and breech block right side of the receiver and on the bottom of the aluminium magazine bottom. The mags will be haenel and blued. The grips will be either wood or black bakelite. Hope this helps Chuck Duke GD #0028
