I have a 2nd model luftwaffe dagger in my collection with a copper finish on the pommel. It was made by A. Wingen. When I searched the internet to find similar examples, to my surprise I only found other A. Wingen lufts who had this finish. Now I wonder, was this something that was typical for A. Wingen or is it just coincidence and is it observed on other makers too? I've attached some pictures of the examples I found (all Wingen).

Danny:
My Anton Wingen Luft2 does not show any signs of copper finish on its pommel.

Thanks for your reply John. I also have an A. Wingen LW without the copper finish. I was wondering if anyone has seen other makers with such a copper finish before (like the examples shown above). In this hobby you keep learning new things all the time and I was hoping someone can tell me more about this type of finish.

Over the years I have heard that there was a copper flash coat applied to fittings prior to a gilt finish being applied, I'm assuming that is what we have here, I have seen WKC's go black but never this colour before from any manufacturer.

Yes Gary that is my thought on this. The manufacturer put a copper flash on the entire pommel which is still commonly done to zinc castings to allow a 2ndary metal to properly attach. Even though this type of platting requires very little copper it was likely stopped as material shortages began to affect every industry in the early 40's.
