got a 'Bayerische Ostmark' guard-marked sa and it's slightly strange.
it's got NO maker mark. the motto's got no background color. and the letters seem shallow & are gnarly. bad etch. no grain showing and it looks like the blade's been nickel plated. ridge line's strong, tho, so I'm guessing period.
never been apart far's I can tell. so I don't know what the guards say or if the tang's got the billet or forge marks.
the chape's missing the solder and finish, i.e., you can see the seam (upper one's ok though.)
the scabb's got the right kind of runners and has the typical 'early' weight.so does the dagger. I'm guessing solid nickel guards. but at some stage postwar it was refinished - with what looks like hi-gloss AUTOMOTiVE paint! the guys over at restoration forum said maybe this can come off easy - maybe even be 'rolled off.' haven't tried that... cd. not remove upper fitting - but would like to see if any orig. finish is there.... probably not b/c/ there's a chip and it looks like bare steel underneath.
overall, I have these sense this one was buttoned up poorly at (whatever) factory made it; and maybe it was saved as an example of lousy workmanship. OR the blade's just fake. yet the guards, grip and insignias look dead original - plus the blade fits the lower guard very well.
expertise invited! happy 2010.

David. This dagger has already been apart because the bottom crossguard is on backwards. The gau stamping should be on the other side of the blade. SSman

Good eye. I did not notice the gau mark on the lower crossguard.

Can you show a few close ups of the blade? I want to see the crossgrainng. I can not tell whether or not the lower scabbard fitting is real but on some SAs it is normal to see a seam line on the lower scabbard fitting. Where did you aquire this dagger?

thanks fellas - sorry I didn't mention the backwards guard...
blade shows no x-grain. like I said it's been plated.
I bought the dagg from an ad. somebody had placed. supposedly it and other stuff I got was 'rescued' by a us army officer in germany ca. 10 years back when he saw things being thrown out during a house cleaning. of course there's more to the story but since the stuff included a bad party pin, who cares? prob'ly the story's like this dagg - a combo of 'the good, the bad and the ugly.'
any other suggestions on getting the car paint off to look for original finish?
I'll throw the blade away unless someone wants to give me a few bucks and add it to their 'fake pattern' collection. the parts will be available if someone makes me a fair offer. I hear BO is a scarce one. thanks again.

Best way to get rid of unwanted paint is to use some paint stripper. It looks like gel and "pulls away" the all unwanted coating; there are several brands available, just check in paint shop or DIY outlet. Very nice handle, but very suspicious blade, let alone the plating.

thanks 777.
but I want to preserve original finish if possible. and controlling this with paint-stripper gel will be impossible I'd guess. as for the original factory lacquer I know we can forget it!

Judging by the photos, the blade looks to have been buffed, the grip has been sanded, refinshed and varnished and the scabbard repainted with a metalflake paint.

Dave , i have used nail polish remover with a Q-tip and it works good to remove the the new paint without damage to the finish.
