A friend brought this sword to me the other day. Everything about it says it's an 1840 US sword. I've looked through my references and can't find one like it. I've never seen one with a basket like this. It's only markings are "S&K", so it might not even be for the US, they made swords for everyone. Inquiring minds want to know.

S&K (Schnitzler & Kirschbaum) a 19th century German maker of swords for domestic use (Germany) and export, it's not a U.S. or German states type/model that comes to mind at first glance. Needing some thought and perhaps checking a few references. Fred

Fred: Orpo identified it as an Italian 1860 Heavy Cavalry Sword. I googled it and the photos match. So I guess I can't sell it as a rare Confederate Prototype at the MAX.

To be truthful, on ebay I would list it as a "Confederate SS Generals' Sword captured after a hand to hand death match on Utah Beach".

Good work by George in finding the end user, with a proposed eBay "provenance" it's very tempting. But I think that it's going to need some "SS" markings on it, with the more there are the better it should look "for the discerning collector, looking to fill in a blank spot in his collection." (it has worked for some other guys - so why not here?). And of course a COA. whistle

Just kidding wink Best Regards, Fred
