Hi there.

Maybe all my doubts are crap, but I find some rare issues with this dagger.

It is an Early M33 Robert Klaas.

I have mainly three concerns: fittings on the crossguards, fitting on the eagle to the grip, and the ss runes.

I found another Early Klaas and the fittings are nearly perfect, in the eagle and in the crossguards, and the eagle looks "plane" fitted, and in the dagger I have been offered it seems a little carved.

The ss runes from the roundel are totally different from the other Early Class.

Then in another web I found the same ss runes that this dagger have, so Im really confused.

I read about 2mm as maximum gap in fittings.

So my main concern would be if aquila and roundel have been changed.

Maybe I can learn something from you.

The dagger to be reviewed, with edited pics :

And now another Early Klass, with perfect fittings, a "plane" eagle perfectly fitted to the wood and different ss runes:

Thanks a lot and sorry if these are silly newbie doubts.

Different SS roundels was used on these daggers as there was several suppliers,,
remember that with time the wood can shrink a bit ... and if the dagger has been "taken apart " it can affect the fit as well ..

The dagger you have shown is 100% correct in every way , and the seller can be trusted! He is one of the few good guys in this hobby:)

Best

The second example you show is the more typical type runes used by Klaas but they did use the other style also .

The dagger is fine. This collector got the same answers on WAF. I sold this edged weapon almost a year ago. A couple of collectors have owned it since. Klaas purchase all of their components and assembled edged weapons, and manufactured nothing. It would be totally logical that not all of their fittings would be exactly the same, on every single dagger.

Farnesius and others,

Look at two topics pinned to the top of this forum - the ones about runes and eagles. That should convince you that these items were common hardware items bought in bulk by dagger assemblers and manufacturers and varied slightly in detail.

Also to add..the amount of sub contractors who provided services for each producer can not be ignored. Not every single part in some respect was all made by one producer. Grips scabbards screws etc. Regards Larry
