A while back I was asked to explain the differences in Imperial Navy and TR Navy hangers. The following are 4 sets from different periods. All have the traditional lion mask buckles, silk moire straps with velvet pile reverse. The main differences are in the hardware material and clip types. The following photos show 4 types beginning with the oldest.
Photo 1) Group shot
Photo 2) Imperial Period. Guilted brass hardware, external clip springs, non swivel clips
Photo 3) Imperial Period. AA except with swivel clips
Photo 4) Weimar Period. Guilted brass hardware, internal springs, short clips
Photo 5) TR Period. Colored Aluminum hardware, internal springs, long clips
These are my thoughts based on studying many period photos and would appreciate any or your thoughts and perspectives on dating these hanger types.
Prior to 1918, the hardware types and features varied widely and became more standardized through the years.
Best regards,
Rick
