This may be a trivial question, but were all enlisted men eligible to receive an army dagger or was it officers only? If so what was the lowest rank to receive the dagger?....Thanks

Dave it was for officers only – lowest rank would be lieutenant. The higher NCO ranks were permitted to carry the officer sword but not the dagger to my knowledge.

Agree with Tom, I have never seen a picture of a Army NCO wearing a Heer dagger. The Luftwaffe officers dagger was different, I have seen many pics of senior NCO's wearing them! Kevin.

No, there have been "lower" ranks under specific conditions (eg Oberfähnrich, Unterärzte and other equal ranks but with officer´s exam) which were allowed to wear the dagger - only with the walk out dress.
This all is well dokumented by a lot of weearing photographs from the period.

Forgot to mention: Officers (and the other authorized) did not "receive" their dagger but they had to buy one for themself.

heers68, but your uniform display has to have officer´s exam grin and has to be a walkout dress.

When you study these photographs (and I have several of them) they do wear officer´s uniform with all officer´s attributes (eagle, collar tabs) and an officer´s visor (!) but (still) only the Oberfähnrich shoulder boards. Keep in mind that these persons have had already officer´s exam but still did not get an officer´s post, were still not an appointed officer which was an administrative act. I think this state between was a rather short period of these men and in general these pics are not common although I do own some of them. Obviously they were so proud to have passed the exam so they did the photograph immediately even before they became appointed lieutenant.

Thanks for the details Wotan, like to build a display like that, a very interesting and as you say, briefly used uniform combination! Kevin.
