Well posting in this section like many others on the forum
is a ghost town with tumble weeds blowing by!

Well look what just turned up in Cleveland!

A picker called my friend that a old lady at a garage sale
was selling everything because husband had died!

All my buddy knew was he was coming to look at some german guns!

Making a short story he purchased these outstanding rigs!

Its a dream come true that this 1917 Artillary Luger all matching 1916 holster with stock Marked F.J. w/eagle Austrian
right out of the time machine! Unbelievable!

Wanted to share this honey of a group! almost 100 yrs old!

Will show the Luft rig next!

Some dust on 1917 holser in back I wiped to see the Eagle and FJ

My friend explained to the lady what she had and her options!

She thought my friend was fair and sold them tohim at half of what he told her!

A guy standing by offered a thousand! My friend of course was
not out to rob her!

Good deeds are rewarded!

Oh and might be more!!!! Will know in a week!

Paul, looking at the components of the artillery Luger holster, I believe that your friend was hoaxed. The straps, flaps and boot that connect the holster to the stock are not at all the quality produced by Germany in WWI. Look at this photo of a LP08 holster and accessories. Notice the strap around the neck of the stock was sewn together, then screwed onto the stock with the strap going through the boot. Notice the safety piece on that strap that prevents the boot from coming off when the stock was attched to the gun. The boot/cup is poorly put together. All the parts are cut and finished like the material coming from Pakistan. And the Austrian marking on the top flap. Well, the Imperial Austrian eagle associated with the initials of Franz Joseph was a two headed eagle. The markings on that flap look like they were made by decorative tools sold by Tandy Leather. I would worry that if the straps and flaps are suspect, then so is the holster. As for the huge amount of vertigris on all the brass and leather. Well this looks like a fairly recent creation. If it was close to 100 years old, it would have corroded the leather, hardened and darkened. That stuff is fresh.

I hope I am mistaken, but I don't think so.

Joe

Me and Military Nut were talking about the holster being a possible non 100 yr old holster!

Could very well be! But sure is a looker!

First off he was not hoaxed! Ladies husband died and this is what he had! Luft rig is 100 % right! Luger also!

Now artillary Luger is real 100%

Now the rig could be as you say and no problem on possibility!

But price pd for lugers and luft rig was very good!

The other rig is not new! Just don't know how old!

It would have added much money to deal! But trust me the lugers
and luft rig make everything good!

My buddy tried to be fair but could have gotten even cheaper!

She had no use or want of items! Lugers are not cheap and
I still think artillary holster rig is sharp and husband
might have gotten it for his luger!

Will never know but lugers are real and luft rig is real!

Collectors wish they could have bought at this price!

So the word hoax does not fit!

Thanks for looking!

PVON, given the circumstances of his purchases, "hoaxed" was not an appropriate word. We know that vets often purchased items to add to their holdings and this is obviously a case where the widow's vet husband was perhaps at a local show and decided to buy the holster and accessories to go with the artillery Luger he had. And of course, his widow knew nothing. And your friend was confused about the originality of the leather. With a price that made everyone happy, what's not to appreciate? That is probably the vet's name written inside the 4" P08 holster. Perhaps your friend can contact the widow again and learn of her husbands first name and try to find some of his unit's history to put with his find.
