Love the lion head plate. That was for a member of Freikorps von Epp wasn't it?

Fellow collectors,

As always I had a very good time at the Max in Pittsburgh. I sold a fair amount of porcelain and bronze animals from my collection and bought a few things, received a couple of wonderful gifts from good friends and came home with a little spending cash, which the bulk of will go directly back into new purchases. heh ... grin

I've been working on my German, porcelain animal collection for several years now and enjoy both the diversity and quality of the subjects. There's something to be found in every price range, not just high-end Allach examples. Some of the other names to look for are Meissen, Nymphenburg, Rosenthal, Hutschenreuther, Schwarzburg, KPM as well as many, many other less well-known manufacturers. Just as with dagger collecting there are myriad maker-marks to study that will reveal the time frame of the items produced.

There are so many fine artists to study in collecting porcelain animals, each having a unique style and talent that makes him or her stand apart from their contemporaries. Some styles are very detailed and realistic while others are more abstract and unsophisticated, but yet still convey wonderful lines and form to entice one's eye. Some collectors enjoy the additional impact that painted color can add to a piece, while many prefer the simple way the light plays on an all-white sculpture. As far as subject matter goes, one can find almost any animal imaginable, even to include some mythological beasts. So there's definitely something for everyone to be found in this area of the German decorative arts.

Jow W - You're right on the money, that's a fairly rare 1938 Rosenthal commemorative, to Ritter von Epp. You'd be surprised to know just how few realized that. I'm glad you spotted it, good eye!

Hope a few more of you gentlemen might try your hand at adding a couple pieces of "white-gold" to your collections, they really make for fantastic decorations that will go with any aspect of collecting German militaria. If I can be of any help to anyone having any questions, I'm always more than willing to lend a helping hand. In closing, many thanks to all of you for your kind words and thoughts.

I wish everyone good collecting no matter what your field of interest might be ... wink

Best!

Bill Warda
