Well, the auction has started on Butscheck Antiques and wanted to see if you found anything you like. I like the unissued luftwaffe photo album, photo album with the iron cross on the cover, and the 2 armbands. Also like the child toy K98 but don't have that much money. frown

There are a couple of bits that I quite like but one has a very high opening bid (near retail) and the other has already made it`s money. I never bought from him myself as he is generally too expensive but mainly for his integrity (or rather lack thereof). I detest his practise of splitting up groupings. I know a lot do it, but with a photo album!

Bad, very bad!

I agree with splitting up groupings. He shouldn't do it if there is so much of it and in nice shape ect with all the history the ones he got has. I haven't bought from him either but he has many good reviews. I'm still surprised that the children sized uniform has no bids!

Im looking at 3 - 4 pieces I have my sites set hard on two of them. The eagle on the childs uniform looks like a cut down regular eagle the ends are cut off that certainly deterred me from having interest in it. I have seen a few of these and they had miniature eagles.

I am looking at a few items as well, one has gone beyond my 'best' price already, and a couple are just on the brink.

Darn it, it's getting harder and harder to find real deals since you guys have caught onto these auction sites wink

I remember on the first auction there were so many good deals that I was too stupid to open my eyes to see. Now the prices have gone up a lot...

Well the auction is over and I bid on 3 different items and was fortunate to get the one I really wanted. A large hand colored portrait of a Gefreiter of Infanterie Regiment 21 sporting his peaked hat and waffenrock the portrait was taken and hand colored in France obviously during the German occupation. The French have a long history of producing these beautiful hand colored type portraits dating back to the 1860,s I have several of these early French hand colored portraits so obtaining this one was a thrill for me as a waffenrock collector. Now I just have to sweat out the shipping process and hope it makes it to Texas intact. So what did you guys pickup?

I didn't pick up anything sadly. Got outbid on all my items and they went higher then I was willing to spend. The children's gun didn't sell as well as most parts of the uniform which surprised me.... Might bit on the gun once I saw some up and get it for a bit cheaper. I looked at the portrait when it was listed and I liked it. Hope it arrives safely!

I bid on 4 items and was watching a 5th.

The bidding went crazy on 3 out of my 4 items.. I had put in offers that were much higher than I really thought they were worth and they went for even more!

The one item that I did get, I was the only bidder so I got it for the initial bid price, good for me. It is a picture of General Dietl, who was in charge of the German forces from 1940-44 as they invaded, then occupied Norway and then fought in Finland.

Pics to follow once it has arrived I the Great Wet North.

Congratulations Gentlemen. It sounds like interest was high and bidding was very competitive on choice items. I find it interesting to contrast this with the preceding thread "Hobby Dying?"
Cheers

John I'm glad you got something too! I wouldn't say the hobby is dying, just that the forum is dying as stated by others....

Kyles:

The forum is only slow if we stop showing our items. Look at all the attention that Pvon has garnered by his enthusiastic showing of past and present items.

I just did a search and noticed that the discussion of GDC dying actually takes place once a year. Mainly the same people who do not post anything worthwhile to the hobby, also stop by once a year and proclaim the site or the hobby as dead.

So we discuss this every year and the site is still here, alive and kicking, a year later so the discussion can be held again.

If all these people would instead post a few of their items, the story will be different.

I too am new to the forum. It is slow at the moment I think because people are on vacation during the summer months. As the show season kicks off in the Fall it picks up. As to your posts ,I have been enjoying them. I am learning about arm bands from you for example. I primarily collect Navy edged weapons but enjoy all collecting areas. Just a thanks from me for your posts. I am one of those that is having difficulty posting photos. I will try again. stay tuned.
Best regards
Rick

Rick, people seem to get auction fever and often pay more than they really wanted or what an item is worth.
It is as if by merely bidding they have made some sort of personal investment that they are reluctant to relinquish. Seen it many times and was a victim of the malaise myself.

The hobby has generally declined in the last 5 years but still has many followers. I have recently paid much more than something was really worth because I needed it to complete a display. This occasionally happens but prices are still over inflated for much that is offered.

Those big syndicate dealers are victims of their own market manipulation. They sit there with stuff priced way too high and now can`t sell it because they humped the market too much.

They already made their millions so in truth they don`t care about the hobby, they never really did. It was only ever about the money.

Generally speaking nice items that are fairly priced will find a buyer.

I know the children helmet was nicely priced because it was the paper liner variant and it was still there. Also had the chinstrap and price tag still. Was 1,75 euros! IMO expensive at that time after being in a huge crisis of money..... Glad I could teach you something Rick. I will send you a PM regarding types of armbands....

Also want to add that I have had "auction fever" before. In the end it was good because I completed a grouping that was destroyed.....

Well my portrait arrived in 2 days from Germany intact! Fed-X is amazing. I also have to jump on the I love Klaus band wagon the guy knows how to treat his customers he has earned my highest recommendation. The portrait exceeded my expectations its a real beauty wish I could find a few more of this quality.

Yes Fed-X international priority 1-3 days only cost $90 eek but im not complaining it arrived in perfect shape in part to the great packing by Klaus. Next time I may try the International Economy 1-5 days if no glass is involved.

$90?! That is a lot for shipping but it is worth it to keep it in good shape....
