Gents,

How about showing some of your swords with etched blades?

Here is one that is an interesting Weyersberg with a quill back blade. This one had to be a special order as this blade style, as well as the etching, was an extra cost option. This particular sword is also personalized with the owner's initials engraved on the reverse langet.

Here is a Bavarian Officer Pallasch by Eickhorn that has an etched blade. It also has a Weimar Republic Zeit Cavalry Regiment number engraved on the pommel cap. So, this fellow served in the Reichswehr and the makers continued to make this sword after WWI.

Nope, no etching, no motto, just a palin Jane blade.

Wotan, that is an outstanding Prinz Eugene! I have never seen one with an etched blade in this truly mint condition. Thanks for showing it.

Here is an only slightest worn navy saber with etchings by WKC. Easily the best conditioned one I have ever seen.
Unfortunately the pics became a little blurry, it is not easy to photograph such ones.

It's kinda difficult to follow swords of that quality, but here goes!:
Two WKC Army Officers with Imperial blades in TR fittings, and an Alcoso NCO's from an Artillery Regt.

Nice Navy Officer sword Wotan! Another one in great condition.

Tristan, you and Wotan are both right about it being difficult to photograph these etched blades. The Imperial blades with blued panels do make the job a little easier. Very nice swords and thanks for showing them.

I think the swords with specific regiments are very difficult to find. Here are a pair of swords from Artillery Regiment 3 that I put together over the years. Both Officer and Enlisted swords are made by Alcoso and have identical etched blades.

TJ has a great looking etch Army on his site now

Here is another Heer enlisted sword with an etched blade that is very difficult to find IMHO. This P guard Holler has a "Rememberance of my Time in Service" etch as is often seen on bayonets. An etching motif that is very seldom seen on sword blades however. I left this particular sword in as found and uncleaned condition to remind me to pull these common Plain-Jane swords out of their scabbards when I see them. You never know what might be on the blade until you look.

An M89/19 of TR vintage by Eickhorn. Has sword blessing etch on obverse of blade and a dedication from a Grandmother to her Grandson on reverse.

There's no doubt that Imperial beats TR when it comes to etched blades!

I certainly agree with Pvon and Bill and the others. I really like these etched blade swords and I was hoping folks would show some of their hidden goodies. You guys have not disappointed.

Since the really outstanding Weimar Republic IOD with the blade dedication from a Grandmother to her Grandson is early post WWI... here is a late WWII example. This is the most expensive of the Eickhorn P guard dovehead swords, the hand chiseled Roon. This one has the late over-the-shoulder squirrel maker mark and the same Eickhorn template etched blade as the one shown on the Prinz Eugene.

Here is another etched blade lion head pommel Heer Officer sword. This one is the mis-named "Armistice Sword" by Weyersberg. The flying bird on the langet is not a dove with an olive branch in its beak but an eagle with a branch of laurel. So, not a sign of peace but an emblem of victory. Notice the personalization with the owner's initials engraved on the reverse langet.

I would love to see some more of these etched swords...

Your Eickhorn langet bird looks much more like an eagle than my Weyersberg version. My eagle looks more like a long necked bird with a topknot. Yours is a great example. I don't think these langet motifs were very popular at the time but that makes them scarce today so we can't complain.

Here is another interesting D guard Bavarian lionhead circa 1935. This is an Alcoso made for the Bavarian Landespolizei. Notice that the Bavarian lion on the langet does not have a crown and the etching is for the Munich Lapo unit.

That's an interesting thought.

There are no crests or (obviously) accoutrements, other than the eagle head, that would indicate any affiliation w/Mecklenburg.

The information I have seen on these "Armistice" pattern sabers is extremely limited and, as Orpo has already mentioned, possibly somewhat "misleading".

In the absence of more knowledgeable opinion, I would think that Eickhorn may have simply just "updated" their Imperial Mecklenburg saber design to create this newer eagle & laurel ("Armistice") pattern.

The reason I asked is that in Johnson's book on Imperial Army Swords (which I'm now learning about!)he has a photo of an Eagle-Headed Sword in wear which he states to be uniquely Mecklenburg.

I currently don't have that JRB book, but I would agree that the Mecklenburg Imperial artillery officer's saber w/eagle head is possibly "unique". I don't know of another standard eagle head pattern sword, other than the Staats_ and Reichs_ models of Prussian galadegen, during that period.

However, into the 3R, there are obviously a variety of eagle headed designs-justice, prison,diplo, SS Honor...and, evidently, this "Armistice"pattern.

A great example of an Ehrendegen prize sword. These are certainly few and far between. I have a police shooting prize sword but it is a plain blade Eickhorn with the inscription engraved on the hilt rather than etched on the blade.

Enclosed are pictures of an KD98 sword with unit marks to the Ulanen-Regiment 7. Along with a triple etched blade. I have owned many Imperial and Third Reich swords and seldom come across any dress swords that are unit marked.

George, very nice swords posted here. I only have 5 or 6, just 2 non TR. This one is very plain jane, but unit marked. As you guys have stated, these are very difficult to capture pictures of. This one's triple etched, and if there's interest I'll try to take pics of it in a few days. I only have two pic in a folder of it.

It would be great if you can get a picture of the etching. I always liked the Saxon style of P guard swords made without langets.

This is a heavily engraved IOD89, prior to 1906 judging by the chromed, 2-ring scabbard. Etched as to 'Wilberg s/l Roestel', and on the reverse the motto 'Dem Feinde zum Trutz dem Freunde zum Schutz' (To your enemies defience To your friends protection).

The distributor is M. Neumann of Berlin and the maker-mark is a small circle with some 'squiggles' in it that I cannot make out, and which is too faint to photo....anyone help here?
