Gentlemen,

I've recently acquired this early NSKK dagger and was wondering if anyone would know the reason why this crossguard is numbered ?

Thanks

I have this early SA with what I think might be a SA man's service number.

Not exactly, Pat. The ID numbers were assigned locally, not nationally like SS numbers. If the man moved to another area, he got a new number in that organization. There are examples of SA ID books that show this. Also, somewhere, I have seen an image of an SA crossguard with a lined-out number and a new number.

Local records were kept of the numbers issued, but I have not seen any databases.

Thanks for posting your Oe gruppe marked Wustoff SA Pat!! Your example now solidifies my example here http://phpstack-500133-1583587.cloudwaysapps.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=261446#Post261446

as the hammer hit of the "Oe" is the same on yours as mine, as the lower part of the letter "O" is hardly visible. Looks to be the same guy applying the mark.
This gruppe mark is extremely rare to find as there is more history in the rarity of this SA gruppe than the producer itself. Mine has a 4 digit number..that seems to been reapplied over an existing one. Congrats on a great find!! Regards Larry

Thanks for the info Larry ! wink

It just made my NSKK dagger so much more desirable.

Kind of unusual to have both Oe group marked with a serialized crossguard, just wonder if they were not all made that way ?

Just in theory...it is possible it was used for this specific gruppe to go to Austria. It is very coincidental that both daggers are Ed Wustoff ( larger logo ) and numbered!! Sounds like your going to be busy reading! wink smile

It seems that a few Gau or Sturm required ID numbers. You tend to see repeats of those few.

And, although I cannot prove it, I believe that in the hectic first dagger distributions in 1934, crates of daggers from some manufacturers went to one area while others went to another. That would account for some makers to be found mostly in limited areas. Only the big manufacturers had their daggers sent to many areas. Make sense?
