Hello All,

Has anyone ever seen this etch before?

I have a note in to the seller for additional photos. This is the only pic I have right now. I'll post additional photos once I get them unless I get the "thumbs down" on this one just from this photo. Of course unless someone would like to see them.

Thanks in advance guys.

Hello

Soory to tell you it is a fake. This kind of K98 bayonets with etched blade are wellknown by german bayonets collectors. Elite units are usually etched on these blades. The firsts bayonets like tis one were made in the 70's.
Regards
Alain

Ed,

The bayonet itself is real, the etching is postwar though. Has value as a novelty or a letter opener but sadly these bayonets sell as period items for many times what they're worth. Nearly all I've seen came back to high profile units or fictitious units with sexy names.

Timothy,

You are thinking of Joe Walters at House of Swords and Militaria. Joe was murdered some years ago after he was run out of the business for selling fakes.

George,
Thanks for that info about Joe Walters. I was not aware that he had been murdered. Any more details?
I never dealt with him, but enjoyed looking though his catalogs. Here is the cover of one of them - 256 pages.

Yes Denny that is the one. I always got his catalogs to see what the latest and greatest fakes were. He started out with a mix of mostly original stuff then ended with mostly fakes.

The tumbnail sketch is that he was killed by a fellow that he knew and let into his rural home. The motive was a mixture of a grudge and a robbery. Cheating people out of money is a dangerous business over time. I remember a fellow (read that as victim) coming up to me at a gun show with ten or twelve swords and around eight of them were Joe's expensive fakes. He was devistated and more than a little upset.

We reap what we sow.

Thanks George. I hadn't heard about his death.
Now that I think about it, wasn't that what also happened to the guy that ran Hollywood Military Hobbies? (his name escapes me at the moment)

Ah, It finally came to me - Roger Steele...

Yes Orpo that was it, you are right about his old catalogs I got some common items from him that were OK but the larger high end pieces Watch Out. I did some business with him in the 1980's and he always paid me for the items. I couldn't believe what was showing up in his later catalogs 90's etc it was clear to tell the items were fake. Thanks for the info on him I read a thread about this over at Wermacht Awards Forum it sounded like a robbery of his stuff or something to that effect. Now that I think about it catalogs like his were all we had in those days and I am sure you remember that. timothy

Denny Roger Steele ran Hollywood Military Hobbies I bought some stuff from him in 77 or 78 can't remember Most of it turned out to be OK items, I did a google on him here while back and a large article came up I can't remember if he died of natural causes I think it said I'm not sure. Another one for you was old Jack at Globe Militaria I bought a load of stuff from him in those days 76 to 79 all of his field gear was OK but a lot of high end items were Fake. All the bayonets and uniforms I got from him checked out. I did get a SS buckle from him fake and marked with the old fake logo OLT and catch was sodered to the Aluminum and you could bend the buckle with a little pressure. Jack at Globe passed away sometime in the 90's I talked to his wife right after this. timothy
