The one side has a long pick and the other has a flat pick head to hack away at the ice .

..and it has a unit mark in the wood near the head of the pick to the " G J R 137 " .
As I read , this unit was stationed in Norway and after the war the units of that country used this equipment .

I looked at one of these mountian climbing axes years ago at some long forgotten show but I remember being very impressed by the high quality workmanship and materials used for one of these great tools. Nice! Wink

Bill : You are correct --the quality is certainly there . It is also not very heavy in weight ; so it could be carried up the mountain .
