I picked up this police officers sword a week or so ago and although I have a few of these and have seen quite a bit of these, this is the first I've seen with a double twisted wire grip. It is my first Robert Klaas police sword and is in very good condition.

Best guess is the wire was replaced at some point.

Rich,

The twisted wire looks like a professionally done period replacement. A very well done repair I would think.

Hate to be a naysayer, but the twist to the wire is not very tight, as compared to sabers. Litte or no age or wear evident. There are people today who do this kind of work and much of it is excellent. These swords were pretty much standard in configuration and this one, of course, does not comply. If the wiring is authentic, it would likely be because the factory ran out of the standard type. It might also be this was on special order. But, given the regimentation and regulations of the SS and police, I find that doubtful. I'm not trying to "diss" the sword, but I am skeptical that the wire was period attached.

As the others have commented on regarding grip rewiring, I think that the fairly significant gouge/chipping at the grip eagle is also relevant to it being done at some later time. FP

Nothing to add on the possible grip re-wire.
But, to me the top scabbard fitting background detail looks similar to those seen on Dachau types and, if I am viewing it aright, it has two side screws as well as front and reverse screws to secure it in place, four screws in all? Don't recall seeing this before.

Barry,
Good eye. It does have 4 upper scabbard fitting screws...a first for me also. As for the double twisted grip wire, who knows. All I can say is that where the wire is missing on the one segment, it had been there long enough to leave an imprint of the double wire in the wood.

Who ever replaced the wire knew what he was doing. That's a tough handle to wrape.

Don Swanson winds them this way. Don't know if he is still in business.

Rich, I found pics of that sword grip with that same type of wire wrap on my PC the other night. In the process of changing Internet providers, will post pics in a day or so. My IPhone can only do so much.

Sorry for the delay. Appeantly my old system for internet was antique. They had to run all new wire, and now it's up and running. I'll add the pics as promised. I believe the was owned by Eric Wein. I know I had gotten a few parts from him in the past.

Regards, Steve.

P.S. Note how similar both of them are.

The wire on this grip is wound noticeably tighter than on the first one, more like that on era daggers and swords. Could have been anytime, but my guess is, if it was done during the period, it was likely done as replacing the original.
