I haven't observed any funny cartoons, but have several funny bayonet stories. Unfortunately they have usually been at someone's expense, and were not at all funny to them! If one thinks about it, the bayonet does not lend itself to being a very humorous object...

Actually, recently watching people (non military) trying to slice the top off champagne bottles with a bayonet as an alternate way to open them for drinking, was hilarious.

I don't think we should get too carried away about the dangers of bayonets. After all, I do not know if there has been a real bayonet charge since WWII.

There has been one by the Brits in Afghanistan only recently in an attempt to deliver the cold steel to their Taliban antagonists:

True story ... back in the early 1970's, either July or August, our outfit had to march in a military parade at Camp LeJeune. It was exceptionally hot that fine swampy, summer afternoon and our dress caps and shirts were soon thoroughly soaked with perspiration. The parade-ground literally shimmered with heat waves much like a Wile E. Coyote cartoon, and the air filled with Sousa marches as the Marine Corps Band put us through our paces for the esteemed "big-brass" and their guests.

As we stood roasting on the tarmac listening to boring, endless, droning speeches, it became difficult to concentrate on anything except how damn hot it was. After a while you could see a few Marines start to wobble here and there and get weak-in-the-knees ... before you know it, one old boy passes out and went down. The bigger problem was that he 'shish-ka-bobbed' himself, as we had un-sheathed bayonets mounted on our M-16's. A couple of guys quickly hustled the Marine off to the back of the parade-deck and the whole event went by un-noticed by the brass. We later heard the poor slob stuck himself in the armpit, but was ok.

That was the last parade I ever attended there having mounted bayonets. grin

Best!

So, you were at Swamps LeJeune in the early 1970s...so was I. You remember the heat...I remember the cold! Got kicked out of CommElect school in 29 Palms, Ca. and sent to 4/10 in November '71. Was there until my enlistment ran out in February '74. Spent 6 months in GTMO TAD w/Bravo 1/10 (long before it became the Caribbean retreat for Al Quada it is known for today). I also recall partaking in a smaller parade practice where one of the officers went to draw swords and somehow knocked his "pisscutter" off his head and onto his shoulder. When the motion stopped and they presented arms to the Regimental Colonel (Belli was his name), the only thing that broke the silence was the Colonel's guffaws!
