Two collectors have previously viewed these photos. There is a difference of opinion on the authenticity of this dagger. One believes the dagger is authentic, the other does not. Naturally, both collectors would like to hold the dagger to confirm 100%.

I do not own the dagger but am considering purchasing it at an auction. These are the best photos I could obtain from the seller. The auction is too far away for me to get to to view the dagger in hand or get additional photos.

All opinions on authenticity would be appreciated. Also, an estimate of value would be helpful.

Thank you in advance.
Ed

I have a name only ground Rohm and few fully ground ones. There are certain traits that are not common across all these daggers. The one I am sure is true for most is that the MM is always much closer to the X guard, this gives it a better asthetic balance.

It also seems to be well polished and yet the etch shows little sign of wear.

I stress that I am by no means an expert but hands on is always the way to go. Have you any others you could compare the inscription with? Have you any providence? Is there a guarantee?

Anyone selling a high end item should be able to offer better pictures.

I am certain some other forum member will pipe up soon.

Thanks for your input Frank. You make some very good points. I have no others to compare the inscription to.
No providence. This dagger is on auction in Europe later this month. Generally, when you buy from one of these auctions you own it unless you can prove fraud or intentional misrepresentation.

The auction is too far for me to travel to look at the dagger in hand.

Usually, the photos are terrible for all items on these auctions. I had to request these photos from the auctioneer.

I'll have to make a decision whether to bid or not based on the feedback I get between now and the auction. The bidding prices will also determine whether I bid or not if I get favorable feedback.

IMO it is an obvious fake.I suggest you leave it in Germany.Never buy any of this crap without a return privilege unless the price is cheap. The reproductions are just to good these days

Zorro, what is fake about it, please? The dagger itself, except, perhaps the blade looks authentic, to include the scabbard and hanger. Problems with EP&S Rohm daggers seem to be more and more prevelant. Has the blade been modified? Is it an out and out fake? Additional information would be appreciated.

I agree with everything you say Grumpy.I think the dagger is an original but the blade is embellished to say the least. The buffing may have distorted the trademark which I do not like. When someone asks for my opinion on a Rohm daggerI am assuming they are asking if I would buy the dagger at a Rohm price, not which parts are original and which are not. This part is good this part is is not ect.Original EP&S Rohm daggers are not anymore difficult to tell if an original as any other maker. If you put an original and this one side by side you would see how easy it is.

Thank you all for your very informative responses. The feedback has been very helpful to me. Naturally, based on the feedback I will be passing on this dagger.

although it would not work here because of the time restraints, to look at the Rohm etch under high power magnification (120X- 200X) would probably tell you that it is a laser etch- I too would pass here. Mike
