Hi Luko,, great maker and an 8 on the rarity scale. Great condition!! Scabbard looks to be repainted as early SAs had anodized scabbards. Looks recent thought as the condition of the hanger does not match that of the scabbard,, especially on the buckle area of the hanger. Regards Larry

Hello Larry, you are right. I think this hanger add someone by the time in the past. But i got it together with dagger. Of course scabbard is repainted as we can see usually on early NSKK. I have more of them.

Take care, Lukas.

The hanger could well be correct and from the same period. The buckle and clip are plated steel which can rust in an environment where nickel silver shows no ill effects.

Ok, experts, Just WHAT does that trademark represent ??

The meaning of the trademark is going to be finally revealed in Whittmann's new book.

It's a pair of winged horns according to Anthony Carter.

Nice dagger, Lukas. BTW. the name Eppenstein is not necessary jewish. There is a city named like that in Austria and this name is also attributed to some german nobles from centuries ago. You may find many jews named Eppenstein, but through the years jews took the family names of the people they lived amongst, so you can find them also under very typical german names like Hess, Mller, etc.

A good example would be the Famous German General,"Erich, von "ManStein" I dont think this is the case here with this general as it all boils down to genealogy. I would not call the maker Eppenstein a Jewish blade maker. Depending upon the spelling and how it can be pronounced many have stereotyped this part of the name when seen as Jewish. Not necessarily the case all the time.

Hello Olaf, i do not know. In my eyes looks this vertical hanger quite strange. I believe it is period made for sure, but not sure if professional in some factory or in some house. Clip are also correct. Anyway i like it, because it's something what we cannot see often (NSKK inc. vertical hanger).

Best, Lukas.

I don't know, Paul. Lots of guesses out there, but nothing that really fits.

Mikee, your guess was right!! smile I have it in two books one of the books is a period German book on steel trademarks and the other is a Carter book... It is horns with wings.. They had at least 3 different trademarks using horns and wings and this one is pictured. So mystery solved. (GOOD books cannot be beat).. Regards: James
