I suspect that we all have our favourite design of army crossguard but I thought I would share a couple of pictures of mine. While the Eickhorn 4th is probably the most realistic representation of an eagle manufactured during the period, this early Horster design was a close contender in my opinion. Nearly every example I have seen of this pattern has shown good detail due to the raised profile and quality casting undertaken by Horster. A scarce design, the daggers below are marked Horster and Paul Seilheimer and I know a couple of friends also have great examples of this crossguard which maybe they will share. As far as I know this design will always have a raised circular platform under the swastika.

V, I was hoping that you might be tempted to share those two, what is also intriguing is that your two matched with differing scabbards, appear to be the same as mine. One with more rounded scabbard bands and semi domed side screws, the other with flatter bands and dome headed screws. I just checked out "that other persons" fine pairing of Horsters, and what do you think the chances are?.

Well I hoping I am that other person – Beautiful and rare daggers posted by my friends in England. Here are my two examples first is a slant grip internally numbered 45 usually you only see the numbers on the Early Horsters with the WKC guard. I love the detail work to the scabbard bands on this one screws are a dome head variety.

My other example I dug this one out of a case at the bottom of a pile of daggers at my first SOS. Has dome head screws as well.

V, I just checked out "that other persons" fine pairing of Horsters, and what do you think the chances are?. Irresistable That slant is the one! Really, what are the chances of seeing another one of those looking for a new home? Chained SS? G.O? Postal? Teno? Nah, common as muck and over-priced

Tom, Thanks for joining the party . That slant grip Horster really is a peach and as you rightly say most of the earliest slant pieces will have a WKC 1st crossguard and be numbered. Yours must have been amongst the first fitted with the new Horster produced birdy. I take it looking at the heavy hand enhancing to the rounded scabbard bands on that slant dagger, that this was the earlier scabbard config and most of the very first WKC fitted examples I can find seem to be matched with the same scabbard. Interesting to see that the firm appears to have altered the scabbard bands along with changing to a type "B" grip during the short period that this pattern was in production.
