Is there something you wanted to know about this tunic?

Yes, opinions please. Came out of an estate where I also purchased a French 1766 Charville musket.

IMO Looks like an army tunic that was humped up with fake insignia. You can see the shadows from where the breast eagle was, and the even the collar litzen.

OK, please elaborate. I only have 2 other SS pieces, an Allgemeine enlisted visor and an armband. I knew this was an army tunic, but the insignia, without including the sleeveband for which I had no clue, seemed to hold up. The police bird seemed OK, nothing glowed under the blacklight. No synthetic threads. The chevron stripes are 10mm. The runes are 5mm. The sleeve band is 250mm. I have many of "the books",including Cloth Insignia. "Truly awful", but why? I don't mind losing a little money if I learn from it.

Hello......OK, now I don't wish to be rude to you, but if as I suspect you are new to TR collecting you must learn a few basics.....Firstly the chances of finding any genune SS tunic/visor etc out of the woodwork is to say the least, slim..... You will find many "genuine" items being offered by various dealers and private individuals on the internet and elseware that come with a cast iron garuntee even though they are totaly fake...If you want to purchase genuine examples of this type of thing, you must pay top dollar via a top dealer. Or I would suggest you approach other collectors who have shown high quality items on forums such as this one, and have been given the thumbs up by all or most who have viewed their particular item. But again to persade them to part with these items you must be prepaired to pay top dollar for them!....Put simply, their are no bargains to be had at this high end of TR collecting and it is fraught with with danger even for the most seasoned of collector! And as someone new to all of this who is buying items based on just a little knowlege and the fact that the item you are viewing "looks old" is bound to end up very disapointed indeed!...Several years ago a very well known (and wealthy) long time collector of SS regalia in USA found out that a very lage proportion of his tunic collection were in fact top quality high end fakes!..The humiliation and loss caused by this, ended in his suicide...You have been warned!!!! Kind regards...Howard.

all of the insignia have been added...examine the way that the insignia sits upon the tunic, especially the sleeve eagle, and the improper way that the "cufftitle" is attached..also what was its price?...a very expensive tunic if it were authentic and period, price is never indicative of authenticity but if bought from a knowledgeable source if it is too good to be true than it often is the case...cheers, Ryan

is there a possibility that the cufftitle could be a good one?!

I really don't like the looks of that "chunky" bullion or the tinsel like borders on the cufftitle. Can you post better close ups?

Also while the runic tab resembles a later war embroidered version the shape of the runes is off, notice how they are not perfectly symmetrical congruent angles //.

Look on the police forum here for some sleeve eagle photos, you will see some good examples of real ones and fake ones, but having the swastika offset that much on what looks to be a hand finished example is a bad sign.

The rank chevron could be good, but the rank litzen on the other tab is bad and sloppily applied.

Don't feel bad, SS collecting is minefield. My first 4 cufftitles and set of officers tabs were all fakes. Any SS collector that says they never bought a fake is either lying to themselves or to you. Fakers have been at it for 60 years, with SS regalia being a prime target.

But between the great large format color books out now and the internet there are some great resources to help. It makes finding that rare piece all the more special when it is real!

Thanks for the responses. Also, I am not trying to "wish" the tunic real. I really want to learn from this experience. Collecting TR is a completely different ballgame then SS. I knew I was out of my league when I bid on the tunic , but this estate auction was the 2nd time ever that I had such good luck and I was on a roll. The French 1766 Charleville musket in museum condition went for $1500.00. That's a $7000.00 + musket, so i figured if I made bad decisions on everything else I bid on I was still in the black. The tunic went for $650.00 and came with a sports insignia and a skull and eagle. I also got a police OS cap for $100.00, police bayonet and officer's shako for $700.00...most likely Wiemer, but unsure, so I'll be putting that on the police forum, an Imperial presentation bayonet for $100.00, a 1700 British flintlock pistol, and a 1700 French flintlock musket. I have taken closeups of the tunic insignia as requested and will include the pieces that came with it. The eagle has an RZM and is marked M1/72 under the remaining pin. The skull is marked with an RZM and 499/41. I put the sleeve eagle and Police OS on the Police forum. No one has mentioned the boards...opinions?
