IT'S A '30S STYLE AND ONE OF LESS THAN 10 KNOWN WITH THE MAR 7, 1936 DATE. BOYLE'S SEEN REVERSE SKULLS AND ISN'T BOTHERED BY THAT. SAYS IT'S GOT WEAR CONSISTENT WITH BEING GROUND DUG.

Pretty rare date for re occupation of the Rhineland..

I believe the upside down skull [re size] was definitely done post war, which would also lead me to believe it is not ground dug.. I've seen and have many dug rings,,this just doesn't have the look.

Other than the resize a really nice ring..

Value,,I'll go out on a limb here,,I take it COLLEAGUE means a collecting friend.. Up here in the Northeast,,a friend price,,depending on how good ;),, $5000 to $7000.

BOYLE DOSNT BELIEVE THE TK WAS REPLACED, AND BY 'GROUND DUG' HE INCLUDES THINGS LIKE EXPOSED TO THE ELEMENTS OUTSIDE - INCLUDING BLOOD, POSSIBLY CHEMS, ACIDIC SOIL ETC.

RING BELONGED TO EWALD REISCHENBECK AN EARLY SS MEMBER WHO'S IN THE DAL WITH HIS BROTHER WILHELM. THEY WERE THE ONLY 2 SS OFFICERS WITH THIS SURNAME AWARDED THE HR. THE DAL ALSO LISTS EWALD AS HOLDING THE BLUTORDEN. DAVID

Hi Gaspare-

I was wondering your opinion on what you feel the ring would be worth if it were not for the ring's skull being upside down and if it wasn't resized.
Would in your opinion the non traditional date help or hurt the value?

The low ss number, blood order holder, early year, and decent condition with nice teeth seems like it would be a screamer if the ring didnt have a few non-textbook issues.

Opinions on this appreciated.Thank you.

pardon the sales pitch, but as gottlieb, boyle and others note, while unusual, 'upside-downies' are hardly unheard-of.

by the way, the 'non-traditional' date, isn't. as gaspare notes, this was the 'rhineland ring,' with march 7, 1936 very significant to the ss as that's the first time it engaged in any military operation.

as gottlieb points out, less than 10 rings bear this important date. boyle adds he's seen very few.

also significant in the condition. the remaining detail is outstanding esp. for a 1930s model. usually they're pretty well 'scrubbed.' thanks for listening! david

There is no way the skull left like that..
Besides,,I see some bubbling from mismatch soldering when they replaced it,,for 100% sure it's been resized or something,,whatever they didn't know enough/familiar with the ring to put it back on correctly..

The ring is actually in pretty good shape for an early ring,,also having the rare date,,and the guy appears on the list..
A nice ring,,don't worry about value,,enjoy it!

Ring market is soft, its been messed with, so I say $4000 value

- you got to remember,,there are many that won't touch a ring with a skull like that.. [might actually be worth looking into to restore!]

Others, well history is history,,its actually in pretty good condition.,and its a nice early ring with a desirable date..

I would agree with G, definitely a re-sized ring. Most likely done post war. The bubbling at the solder line is the first clue. The second is that the skull seems to be placed off center when compared to the runes...look at the pic from overhead(last pic). In the pic, the skull is at 6 o'clock position. The dual sig runes and ty rune in a circle opposite the skull is at 11-11:30 position. Not sure that I've seen another this far off that doesn't have other evidence of a re-size, which this one does with the bubbling.
As for value...a re-sized ring with the skull placed upside will be worth less than a completely untampered with specimen. As someone else mentioned, the market is very soft right now with the economy in tatters. If you can get $4000, jump on it. I think a little less than that is probably spot on.

BTW, I have one of the other Rheinland rings Don has certified. A heavily well worn specimen with classic engraving and a lot of character.
