I am hoping that some of the expert Eickhorn collectors on this forum may have some information on this dagger. It is a early Eickhorn, with tapered tang blade. The logo however is not the early oval. All fittings, including scabbard, as well as rings and bands are made from aluminum. The scabbard throad is pressed in, no screws. The aluminum is covered in thick plating. Some of the plating on the scabbard has developed blisters. The entire dagger weighs only 250 gramms compared to around 380 gramms for a standard early dagger.
Has anyone seen another example like this?

Yes, I saw one just like it on a dealer site....but wasn`t fast enough apparrently.

But, otherwise I have not seen an Eick like this before and it is an interesting configuration. looks as right as rain from the pattern of the scabbard bands, pommel etc but the pattern of the x guard is quite different from other Eickhorn x guards though sharing some traits. I do not have time to make close comparison now as I am preparing to leave for Africa but I`m sure other of my Heer colleagues will diligently compare to highlight the characteristics.

Nice dagger!

My initial consideration is that Eickhorn may have experimented briefly with with production methods and quickly disregarded as not being of a suitable quality? Curious that for a prolific manufacturer I have not seen another like it. Others may have.

Curious piece this one, almost like an experimental one off. As Landser pointed out, there are a couple of non-standard attributes that I have never seen on an Eickhorn this early in production. The silver plated alu base metal and the pressed scabbard throat.
We know the brushed aluminium fittings where being used from very early in production and it seems that many manufacturers ( Pack, ACS, Holler ) experimented with silver plating aluminium before the material was designated for higher priority manufacturing, planes etc, or the quality of the finished product proved to be sub-standard.

You also often also see Eickhorn daggers from this period with a mix of earlier and later parts, i.e the type 1 crossguard on a dagger with non-slant grip and the 1935-41 trademark or a type 2 crossguard matched with an earlier double oval 1935 stamped blade.

The pressed scabbard is interesting and not something you see everyday. It would be interesting for anyone who has a dagger with a pressed scabbard to post as I do not think the makers have ever been discussed before. I also like the unusual finishing to the crossguard quillions on this dagger, just below the wing tips and above the swirls. Never seen that before either !.
Personally, I love to see dagger such as this one, out of the ordinary and a glimpse at how the Solingen firms experimented and strived for perfection.

VERY unusual and interesting piece! The fittings are very unique(I noticed the pommel first actually) but just look "right" together. I think it is as it was in the period, just a very rare experimental piece! Glad to see it! Kevin.

Wolfgang I also like the dagger and think Paul sold it for a fair price. The scabbard bands and crossguard do remind me of Eickhorn the tapered tang is a plus in combination with the aluminum base metal confirms the early manufacture nice variation!

Thank you for the comments. All the parts looked Eickhornish to me as well. I appreciate the expert opinions. It would be nice to see another example of this dagger.
I love the early and unusual daggers, and even in this condition I am glad to have it in my collection.

Wolfgang, I like the way the tang is silvered. Just a extra touch to prevent corrosion. I like this unusual early army dagger.

Actually, that link from WW2 collector is to a quite different dagger. Not maker marked and in super condition. Wish I had seen it! What a really nice piece!

Lakeside, (almost uniquely) does still have what might be considered the occasional good value item.

I have now found a second dagger, almost a perfect match to the thread starter. It seems to indicate that this was likely a regular production version. This second dagger is well worn, so a piece that was actually carried. There are a few small differences. The scabbard rings are a little smaller on this dagger, and the grip is a bit slimmer on the first dagger shown.

I was wrong about the scabbard throat, closer inspection shows that the throat was actually formed as part of the sheath.
The guard seems to be a bit of a cross between the first and second model?
