Hi, the saw-back seems to be nicely done and in line with what one would expect. Most of those added by someone post-war are rather sloppy or done in unequal increments. This one does not seem to have that, so I would give it a thumbs up. JAN

Classic Emperial German 84/98 sawback the date on the spine appears to be 1915. I had one like yours without a flash guard that was dated 1915 which are hard to find and got good money for it.

I paid good money for this ! , well i got it for quite a bit less than what a sawback 98/05 goes for in the uk , coupled with the fact that these do not come along often ,I just had to have it ! just when i wanted to start adding some daggers to my collection bayos keep diverting my funds , it's a hard life, Will

Hey Will,
thanks. I did not buy anything recently but I am on the hunt for a nice sawback FW bayonet long or short. You did well for buying these. They are not common to find and usually quite pricey.

Hi Jan , totally with you on the sawback FW's they are beautiful edged weapons. Well she arrived yesteday and is now sitting with my other pre ww2 stuff ! when i first started in this game i was focussed on ww2 bayonets , alarming how quickly you start to diverse into other areas , in fact i have almost put ww2 edged on hold and am concentrating on imperial bayonets and accouts! Regards Will

Beautiful indeed :-) I really love imperial pieces as well. Who knows, maybe I will also delve into something different than dress bayonets one day. JAN

Hi Will,
Who's the maker of your new 84/98 sawback? A lot less common than saback 98/05s.

Hi Tim, blade is marked ERFURT which i'm not sure if that is a makers mark or an assemblers mark ? regards will Hi Will, Erfurt was the Prussian state armory. I'd guess yours was made there since there's no other firm's name on the blade. Sometimes you'll see a maker on each side when the blades are made one place and completed at a second factory. You asked to see other examples... I don't have an Erfurt, but here's one made by Gottlieb Hammesfahr. It has an inspection mark on the spine, but no cipher or date.

Thanks Will.
That's a nice looking frog, but it looks like WWII vintage. If it were me I'd hold out for a WWI era frog to match the bayonet. They can be tough to find though, I was lucky this was a set.

Will,
You're right, there's very little difference between the frogs. The thing I noticed was the rivets look like they're aluminum. Aluminum rivets weren't used during WWI, they were usually steel or copper. If you're interested I bet with a little research you could date yours pretty closely based on the maker mark and rivets.

Hi Will, I'm with Tim all the way regarding the frog that you're thinking about bidding on, definitely WW2 vintage, and your S84/98 sawback would look much better in period leather. Although it has meant that I've accumulated numerous WW2 bayos that I didn't intend to, I've bought them for the frogs they were in. If they had steel or brass/copper rivets and no WW2 dates they went on my WW1 pieces, the last one came from the same guy who supplied your sawback. £100 for a steel riveted frog with a matching number 98k bayo in it seemed fairly good to me!!! I put the frog on one of my S14s, and if it's not a WW1 item you can't tell the difference.
Regards Chris.

Thanks both for your imput , i was the only bidder at this time but as i'm not in the market for ww2 era frogs right now i've retracted my bid , it is as stated by tim a nice looking frog ! look forward with interest to seeing what it goes for , Chris , I have done much the same in the past , bought mismatched 98s for the frogs then sold on the bayo! that = free frog , also agree that adam at ridges has at times been very competitive with his prices , Regards Will
