Bob...I dont guess there are a lot of Japanese collectors on here. I think they are running around 400 buck. I have one, a late war one that the vet got on Guadalcanal. It still has the mum and came with the bayonet and i gave 400 for it.

Bob,
A lot depends upon what model rifle as well as the factory and series. I think Earl is about right. You should be able to find a common series matching mummed type 38 or 99 for $400 or so. To the serious collector many times a rare series with the mum ground can be worth more than a common rifle with a full mum. But to the casual person the value is in that untouched mum. Be aware of mum with strikes or lines through them. I seen people selling a struck mum as "full mum" but any lines through the mum hurt the value probably as much as being completely ground off.

Bob: In addition to the unground mum, you might also search for ones where the receiver and bolt numbers match. I bought a Type 99 at a local auction last weekend like this. Happy hunting! Ross Kelbaugh www.ssdaggers.comwww.HistoricGraphics.com

Some early rifles were matched with an assembly number, not the serial number. Some matching 38's and 44's have been called non-matching by folks just taking a quick look.
