It might be a Feuerwehr service axe, maybe not. Could also be from a number of different organizations too. Like Mikee, I would also like to see what the stamp looks like up close.

It arrived yesterday; first of all I'm surprised to see two WaA195 stamps besides the Goat's head mark, by its size (35-40cm length) & shape I assume is a service axe while I was waiting for it I made some searches on the net and here's what I found:
I assume is german origin, as I found this other axe from a german firemen site of an identical (in shape) service axe
I found this other photo in a german auction site of an identical maker mark on other axe also marked '1940' so also I assume it can perfectly fits in the same period, what amazes me is that if it's a firemen's axe it would be not waA marked, maybe Wehrmacht service?

Very interesting. I have not seen this type of axe before. I think we see a lot of the dress axes, but this one is definitely made for being used!
Nice catch!
Good hunting, Johnny

Thanks for the comment Johnny, I also think is not a very often seen item, but they had to be a very common sight for the common soldier. best regards

Hi! I found this other Feuerwehr service axe with exactly the same maker's mark! the best thing with this one is that it comes with the original sheath marked 'Carl Busse Mainz' which, as long as I know, is a reputed maker of leather articles for the German Army. also marked 1939 so (IMO) is definitively from the war period. The axe is of rather crude manufacture, as you can expect from a war produced item (time fabrication salvage?) best regards

In addition to being a seller of leather goods, Carl Busse, Mainz was also a distributor of Feuerwehr items including bayonets. Busse apparently did not distribute standard KS98 bayonets as the only blades I've observed their mark on (in approximately 14 years of looking) were Feuerwehr. Beautiful looking axe.

Hi Billy! Thanks for the info, do you think there's a posibility that this maker mark belongs to a distributor?

Possible but doubtful, very few distributors utilized a logo. I suspect the mark is that of an obscure manufacturer yet unknown to us.

I knew I'd seen this mark before but had to remember where. The mark is a rams head (Widderkopf) and the makers name is Wrder and Pandel from Wuppertal,Kllenhahn not far from Solingen. As you can see from the ad they made hand tools to include all types of entrenching tools. 1934 invoice from this company as well. The number under the rams head if it had one is the weight in grams, like your 5th picture on the first page. Thanks.

Sorry I didn't answer sooner, entertaining visiting relatives. The short answer to your question in my opinion is, although I'm no expert on these type marks, I don't see why not. This company like most, targeted organizations they thought would have a need for their product. As you can see from just this one ad, they targeted and tailored that product to an organization they believed would have a need for it.
I have another ad from this company marketing their products to the Jungdeutschland and Pfadfinder or scouts. My camera broke "rug rat", but as soon as I get a new one I'll post the ad for you. Thanks.
