Was there any difference in the daggers possessed by the Generals, specifically were they gold, I have a gold scabbard and wonder if it's real, or did someone have it plated later.

The patina is what you would expect.

I don't think such would have been regulation. For a while, Wittmann had a LW dagger for sale with a copper-plated scabbard. Normally, when plating, a "flash coat" of copper or brass was applied prior to the finish coat (silver, nickel, etc.). Your scabbard doesn't appear to be a flash coat. It could be there were impurities in the final plating that resulted in the goldish tone, or, if the plating solution was heavy with nickel, that could result in the same way. Nickel will turn a gold tone over time. It could simply be the owner had it plated gold. You do see gold-plated army "general's" daggers now and then. However, most LW general's daggers seem to have a gold portepee and gold-plated hanger fittings, if those. It would seem the hilt pieces would also be gold-plated, if the idea was to signify the owner was a general. Could this dagger have been that of a general? Absolutely. Anomalies do occur. But, there is no way of knowing for certain what is behind this gold scabbard.

I love a mystery, thanks for the response. The dagger and the scabbard were separate purchases, they did't come together.

I'm new to Third Reich daggers. I certainly have no opinion either way. I though I would post my scabbard for comments and I appreciate all comments here by knowledgeable members. It's always nice to know what you have, but sometimes that's subjective. My personal experience is in Imperial Lugers. I just bought a WWI Imperial Navy dagger, a beautiful piece.

After research, there were 23 Generals in the Luftwaffe, anything contributed to a Luft General would be considered a very rare piece indeed. Problem is, stories or evidence of actual scabbards like mine is difficult to prove if not impossible. So a mystery it shall remain as to where my scabbard came from. Isn't this a great hobby ??

Interesting scabbard,I would like to see it in hand.. In can tell you this is a "generic" scabbard not attributed to any particular maker. Many different makers ordered these from an unnamed fittings producer only to mark them with certain finishes and throat screw configurations and types. I can not tell where the throat screws are on your example in your pics. Post a pic showing the throat screw or screws and I may be able to tell more. Kevin.

I certainly would not pay more for the dagger as personally its a stretch for me I know you see allot of Eickhorns with this goldish color due to the plating process.

What the heck, nothing ventured nothing gained. Who wants to go life breaking even. Boring if you ask me.
