Ok, so what has happened to last week's posts?

You know that there weren't a lot anyway, but this sure doesn't help keep people here.

Perhaps someone could explain what happened.

We had a lot of good discussion going on a few of the forums.

Can we get it back?

Im missing one from last night that was active before the site went down?

After checking further im also missing 4 ads i placed in the for sale section .

Apart from this thread everything else is Nov 7th or before ten days worth of threads have vanished as far as I can see

AJ i agree. The lastest post i can see on any of the forums is 11-7-11 besides the ones posted today.

Just asked Dave about some missing threads from last week and he told me basically that nothing was wrong.
I insisted and he replied that I could " think what you want " but that no threads were missing.
Now that I see that I'm not alone and feel reassured that I wasn't dreaming.

You know it is bad enough that we can not keep our best people interested in this site.

Look at the number of posts each day on WAF or GCA vs the few here.

But, losing 10 days is a little tough to take.

Pat...As far as i know all these post that are missing happened after the site went down last night. I was replying to a post last night when the system went down and i tried to get back on it till one am and finally gave up and went to bed and the site was back up when i went to it at around 10 this morning.

One of my threads has conpletely disappeared.

wow management needs to step it up here at gdc it was the best, as my membership just expired im not renewing ill be selling my stuff at the other forum,what has happened everyone asks, say what you want when gottlieb ran the sight it was smooth and very popular now its a dull dreary forum...

There 2 or more threads missing from the hj knife forum & a load of for sale threads are gone, man this forum is dying a sad death

The Imperial forum is down to a half-dozen threads left, what's the deal with that? This is really a sad mess ...
Whoever is handling the controls is doing a terrible job!

I would assume an auto back-up system wasn't working. All of us that work with computers know that things like this happen. Yes I lost several posts, but its not the end of the world.

Hosting service had a catastrophic failure of the main SQL server last night. When the server crashed, it took the latest backup files with it. We are currently restored to the last good backup file and looks to have lost about 10 days worth of posts. The hosting service is still looking at files trying to find a more current backup. If they do, I'll post a notice so we can back up today's posts. Sorry guys.

Thanks Vern. Any idea why it crashed.

No idea beyond "catastrophic failure", but it looks like they lost the entire server disk array. Their backup policy was to keep 10 days of backups online in a disk array contained in the server. That way if one disk drive failed, everything would automatically recover and the bad drive could be "hot Swapped" with a new one without having to shut down the site or the server. After 10 days on the server, the oldest backup was copied to DVD. Apparently, they lost the entire server disk array. The server has been replaced and the site was restored to the new disk array from DVD. Policy has now been changed to copy backups to DVD when they are created. The downside is we got everything they have copies of.

Bummer. Well on the bright side we only lost 10 days worth and not the whole thing.

It is a bummer, but I think that most of us know what it is like to not have a backup work when we really needed one.

thank you Vern for talking about this. I knew something was up when it would not let me into the forum all night.
I know it was out of your hands, but still sucks to up load photos ,ect. then 2 days later all gone.
Technology is great , when it works...
if it can Not be restored ,Please let us know , so we can re post topics.

I know that's really inconvenient to lose posts, but I don't see how it's enough to quit the site. It wasn't done on purpose - it happens to sites every so often. Hotmail was down for a full 2 weeks this summer.

Yea, what's 10 days compared to the years and hundreds of threads lost at this site?

So many great threads on Gorgets, daggers, you name it, all gone.
GDC doesn't resemble anything that it was in 2005/06.
Must be the economy.

The 10 days I assume are gone.

Any word on a future dedicated server so the older (pre-2006)for read only threads can be brought back?
