Hello All,
I have recently seen an 84/98na bayo that is unit marked 24.DE.166,my best guess on this,so far,is an Ersatz Battalion of Leib-Dragoner-Regiment(2 Grossherzog-Hessisches)Nr24.There are,I expect, numerous other possibilities, but I can't say I've come across many 84/98na bayos with a regimental marking of any description. They are, perhaps, uncommon on most wartime produced pieces and are therefore a little more desirable. The dealer who has this particular bayo certainly seems to think so,as he's asking about twice the normal price for such a thing!!!Before I convince yet another dealer that there's one born every minute,I'm asking myself if it's been messed with? The hilt and about 20mm of the ricasso has been blued and the blade left bright, and as far as I know, bayonets reissued after 1918 were blued overall,is that the case???
Chris.

Chris

I tend to agree with your interpretation of the unit mark except that the sub unit of a cavalry unit was the Eskadron (squadron).

You're right - you don't tend to see a lot of unit marked 84-98na - presumably due to the decline in their use as the war progressed.

Bright finished bayonets from WW1 were blued overall when used during the post war period.

The blueing on this one does seem slightly strange. Wouldn't like to speculate with seeing photos.

Hope this helps a little.

Regards

Richard

Hello Chris
The bayonets reissued after the WWI were bright and stamped 1920 on the crossguard. They were quickly bued overall with 1920 on the crossguard.

not all reiswehr bayontes were stamped 1920 or 1921.

after 1927 the most were not stamed in this way.

the order to blue the bayonets came in 1932. All bayonets had to be blued BEVOR they issued to active troops by the unit until the end of 1932.

Hello Gardist2003
I agree with you for the 1920 and 1921 markings. Even if the order to blue the bayonets came in 1932, don't you think they were blued before this date because we find more blue bayonets than bright ?
Do you think the bright bayonents which were early issued were also blued after ?
Regards
Alain
