I thought I'd open up the floor to get everyone's thoughts on the supposed Justiz bayonet that was on Eban recently. The piece's blade was WKC marked on the obverse & had wooden grip plates. It failed to sell with only 1 individual bidding 4 times. Feel free to post your thoughts on it, pro or con. I have some thoughts on it but would like to see what the others are thinking. http://cgi.ebay.com/Very-Rare-...0QQitemZ190288010530

WKC offered the Justice and Prison official bayonet. It had polished fittings and brown wood grips. The catalog states that the blade is 25 cm long, with a burnished scabbard. An option of a slot for mounting on a 98 rifle was 1 RM more. The bayonet catalog number is 1062, see photo. Notice in the picture it had the knights head over WKC. This catalog came with the number 19-price list. There was NO mention of a short bladed bayonet.

At any rate the TM on the Ebay one is pre 3rd Reich.

Thanks for the thoughts, you're both right of course. The grip plates looked well enough fitted but I'm surprised no one mentioned those rivets. I thought they really looked odd.

Billy
I have only seen pictures of this bayonet, in George Wheelers book. I have not a clue how the rivets should look. I have several WKC bayonets. When looking at the reverse side of the rivets there is no continuity of the way they were struck. To be honest, I think this would a easy bayonet to fake.

T,
I'm afraid you're right. The rivets on the Eban piece just did not look 3R period.

Getting back to the maker mark, I've seen one or two with early 3R Eick marks. Has anyone seen a good one with an Eick mark that they thought was period?

Yes Billy, I'm with you on the thought of the rivets. They do look a bit off. What the Justiz piece is supposed to look like exactly, I don't know. George this is a hint hint, revise your book in an edition that's in color. I'll spend $75-95 on it. I'm going to add some pics of one I have that's a WKC, wood grips. And one from an ebay person that I chatted with that's from his collection. His is the closest thing that I've seen for color that's a maybe.
I'll show his first. I know his name is Neil, the name he flies by is pollarballs, I hope he doesn't mind if I add his pic. He does pick up some high end bayos. If I remember right he's from the UK.

These three pics are of my piece. It's a short WKC. Just the knights head, no lettering. Early nickle plate, red felt insert. It was bought from ebay, no mention of what the seller said it could be. The pics were bad, but it looked like wood grips to me, and right TM for this style piece.
I was pleasently surprised that if a re-grip occurred, they took the time to border it and checker it by hand. Very well scalloped on the edges and a lot of darkening on the wear where the hand would be.
Steve.

Last but not least, I rolled the dice on this piece for $45, why not.

Billy,
I think one has to look at these Justiz bayonets individually. WKC is the only manufacturer who listed the Justiz bayonet in their catalog as the Nr.1062 but there may have been other makers who made them. In truth, it was simply a standard KS98 with wooden grips instead of plastic or stag.
I don't like the grips, and rivets, on the ebay one that you show. The back looks a bit rounded from what I can see. Steven, I do like the looks of the two that you show. I like the grain and the rivets on the first one and I like the checkering on the second one as well. I am not certain that the one with checkered grips is a Justiz bayonet but I like the grips.
I think this one is a Strafanstalts bayonet because of the style and markings but it is an item of issue with hard rubber grips.

Thanks all for your thoughts. George, that's a beautiful bayonet whether Strafanstalts or not! Thanks for sharing it.
