In addition to my “Horrible runners “ thread I came across a few photos I had of a “Tabbed Runner”
I must say, that it would be more so important to really think about this type of disassembly , compared to the riveted assembly. I strongly advise again, unless you can not see things for what they are through examination and application,, and now in this instance “Geometrics” Don’t attempt this at all.
If you manage to get the throat out of the runner it would be best to take a wooden craft stick and clean it the best you can with Never dull and then a Renwax application afterwards. This process may take twice as long but you wont have to remove the runner from the throat, if you come across one like this.
IMO these are rare to find and not at all easy to take down. In Photo #1, as you can see there is age and rust spots. There is no way of moving these runners apart at all because of this type of attached construction. Unlike its counter-part with the “riveted” runner that can be twisted to the left or the right. I can only assume that this was an early style attachment,, or a “Left over part” that was altered.
This runner has to be removed so as to access the inside runner and remove the ,dirt, grime and rust!
Cleaning this is the easy part.
As you can see there are 3 tabs and the larger one in the middle with a slot. This tab in the slot is where it is crucial that you must bend it,, upward,, just ever so slightly to wiggle it out from under the slot. The 2 outer tabs just slip off.

Now that the one runner is off,, it is not necessary at all.. to remove the other runner for cleaning since it is already acccessible and there is no more need of added stress , with dealing to put back 2 tabs at the right tension!
Strange to see this oddity,, take a look at the bottom of the one runner there is a small hole unlike the other runner that has none. It is My opinion and which looks to make sense is that this runner with the hole was a left over “riveted runner” and was cut into shape to fit the slotted style throat. This hole on the runner should correspond with the correct thickness of a rivet! ( second photo )
I have included the photo from my Gebr. Becker SA runner to show you the difference with the” Riveted” style runner compared to the “Tabbed” style.
Where I have the 4 arrows pointing to, on the larger tab is a box like shape that hugs the space between the edge of the throat and the slot on the throat.

Since I bended the tab slightly upward to remove the runner ,,,,now it must be bent slightly back so that the “Boxed part “ of the tab does not make a rattling noise.
That rattling noise will be because the runners are too loose and like wind chimes dangling in the wind,, your runner`s “ boxed tab” will make a sound like a little boy dragging a stick up upon a white picket fence. That sound is the boxed tab rubbing up against your blade Motto!!

Bending this at the right tension and trying to slip the center tab under the throat, while the 2 outer tabs must stay on top of the throat,, is not easy. I was fortunate enough to get this “right tension” on the 2nd try. I hope that I will not have to come across one of these again as it is not easy at all.
Then replace runner and throat as per my directions in my “SA scabbard throat removal” thread

All things in our lives require some sort of maintenance time and again. Things we leave untouched and are not maintained are chances we take, and we hope for the best,, not just in Daggers and Runners ,but in all things that impact our lives. Mostly people!! …and without people there would be nothing to write. Regards Larry
