That is definitely a United States Cavalry insignia. "BHT" is the unit and "A" is the squadron/troop. From the clasps, it is after WWI.

Maybe a ceremonial unit attached to an Armored Cavalry regiment or a military school. HT might Horse Troop.

I think it might be "Black Horse Troop" a unit with historic lineage, but I think thw insignia looks more like Vietnam era. where the 11th Cavalry traced its lineage to Blackhorse units.

"The Black Horse Troop
[From the Richmond (Va.) Times, Feb. 23, 1896.]

One of the most gallant, serviceable, and picturesque contingents of the Army of Northern Virginia, was that famous company of cavalry known as the Black Horse Troop, which won such bright laurels for its daring exploits, and the valuable information and aid it rendered the Confederate commanders in some of the greatest engagements of the Civil war."

*****

The 11th U.S. Cavalry was activated on 2 February 1901 at Fort Myer, Virginia. In December of that year, the Regiment was deployed to the jungles of the Philippines. Its mission was to help neutralize the insurrectionist forces that were trying to seize power in the aftermath of the Spanish-American War. The Regiment served under the first civil governor of the Philippines, William Howard Taft, who would later become President of the United States.
