The McSaar really comes in handy and in order to NOT do something unlawful, I'll say it's above 5 but below 10.

I agree with Lloyd, if it looks like its in good condition and being on that position of the scale, I would go for it myself. Its not a greatly common logo like Eickhorn or Pack but its not extremely rare,,but it is desirable. Regards Larry

Larry, You seem pretty up on the group marks on the SA daggers, what do you think of the group mark on this Melzer & Feller I am getting having "He" on it versus the "Fr" usually seen? I would add pics but the ones I have been provided are too big! Kevin.

Hi Kevin, I personally dont see anything wrong with that dagger being Marked with an "He"! That SA Gau is right next to the Franken Gau. Practically neighbors! A small amount of these daggers were made and not all at once but over time. These daggers never left the maker with Group marks on them but were applied to the district it was intended for when it arrived there. I am still trying to get my hands on a Fisher reference book and that reference can give a better sense of direction if it is natural to see that type of Group mark for that dagger,,, but it should not be taken as whole truth but a guideline. Melzer and Feller I believe were located right above the 2 SA group districts and was a Thuringia based operation. Alot of great daggers came from Thuringia makers,, Kober being one of them. Melzer&Feller were given a contract or (contracts) to produce daggers. Where they went after that was up to the SA office. They never made it so it seems on the RZM list so what they produced in the early years was the end of it. I am just finding out now that there were more than 2 makers who sent daggers to The Berlin SA, so due to the close proximity of Hessen and Franken, I would not worry about it. I know as collectors we all want something as close as possible to be period and correct, and thats a natural concern. The demographics of that area was almost a near center point of distribution. I still think you have a great dagger and i would like to help you post photos of it. (PM sent) Regards Larry

THANKS Larry!! Thought people might like to see this dagger for reference. It has some characteristics that seem very consistant in all examples I have seen. (not many!) The "thick" guards with shallow lines or slots engraved in them, black motto like alot of the Thuringen area makers had (I love the look!),varnished grip and just a bit of the dark tang showing where the blade meets the guard. love to see more examples if they are out there! Kevin.
