The sword itself looks ok from the pics. But due to the overall condition (partially very rough, looks like having been heavily corroded and restaurated) the runes on the top of the pommel (whitch was an additional, private feature during the period) look brand new and have - at least what I can see in the pics - not the least traces of corroding. This does look very spurious to me.
concerning the price: Those swords (without -spurious- runes) are offered at many dealersīsites so please take a look for information. Although a heavy minus is the not good condition and the -for me- very spurious runes.
Regards,

Ive got one.....this looks nice but its certainly been cleaned..? The one I have is SS marked on the bottom of hilt and top of scabbard. However it does not have the SS runes on the top.

Ive set a goal......find a FHH and buy it from a vet.

Yes, this one is mareked with runes in those 2 places as well. Agree - it has been cleaned and corrosion is visible on the grip. The blade however is really nice. I looked at the dealer sites and they go from 1300 - 1900 but any sugestions how this particular piece could be priced on a real market - not the dealer site? Is $850 a good deal?

850 is at the top of the price range. What is the eagle in the handle made of? Mine is Copper, i was told this indicates it was a water police sword.
I took mine to the show the other day to see what some of the folks thought.......must have had 15 low ball offers. When I see those guys low ball items of high value.....makes my stomach turn. Seen a 2nd Luft.....go for $100.00.....little did the fella know.....his butt was gonna be sore. lol.

I wouldn't pay any more than $850. $750 is closer to the mark, considering the condition. If the sword was in a strong "excellent" condition, it would likely be in the $1200 to $1500 range, perhaps a bit more due to the pommel runes. The runes on the pommel add considerable value. Officer grip eagles on these are almost all made of copper. They were originally plated, but, usually, the plating is gone or only remnants remain, due to handling, age and exposure. Eagles on NCO degens are almost always aluminum. If this one has such an eagle, it probably has been replaced.

Grumpy I was told that the copper eagle stands for...water police. Is this wrong?
