One thing is for certain when you attend garage sales is you never can be sure what will turn up. I picked up this "survival Kit - Off Road" case very inexpensively at a sale yesterday. Someone had broken the key off in the lock so it couldn't be opened. I liked the case anyway so I went ahead and bought it. Jim

Well Bill: It's good to see at least one member of this forum looks at something besides daggers here. I was beginning to wonder if anyone was going to even ask about the contents. I was able to remove the lock and it turned into a real time capsule. This is apparently some type of USAF survival kit from the 60s based upon the contents. The nicest piece in here is the knife as the blade is still in the original wrapping. In addition to the food, water and knife there are survival blankets, matches, tools, marking equipment and medicine. Unfortunately they didn't include a survival weapon like a brand new 45 auto! I was able to date this based upon the year stamped on the food supplies. I wonder what condition they're in after all this time? I won't be trying any samples though. Jim

Well Bill: It's good to see at least one member of this forum looks at something besides daggers here. Hah! I know how that feels, Jim! I love the edged stuff as much as the next man, but my first love in collecting is the more artistic stuff - like porcelain, statues, etc. Those types of threads don't get nearly enough attention around here. (then again, it *is* called the 'German Daggers' Forum, hah!) Seems like a pretty interesting find. It's always fun when you stumble across something that's been undisturbed for decades. Seems like you made the right call by not trying out the food rations, though. Just further proof that yard sales can still yield great stuff. Congrats. T.

You're right Tiberius. Here was my other find over the weekend which will probably be also ignored. I ran this by a well known dealer to confirm what I was seeing. Jim

Nifty helmet, Jim! You really did have a great yard sale weekend.
I went to a really nice sale that was the family clearing out stuff from the long-time residence of deceased relatives. There were some neat things, like artwork, taxidermy, and decorative stuff, but alas, no militaria.

Yes! This is a double decal SS helmet and I'm told these are very rare. Of course the value would be much higher if the decals hadn't beem messed with. Jim

Hi Jim thanks for posting the German helmet find,, i have a repainted Helmet with the same numbers inside. I looked at the Hayes SS uniform book and it seems mine is a waffen SS helmet. Your posting helped me alot thanks and BTW great tresure box find you have. Looks like the survival knife is in good condition. larry

Glad I could help Larry: The survival knife is essentially in brand new condition with the protective paper wrapping as it came from the factory still on the blade. Jim
