I obtained this flag from a 101st Airborne veteran and cannot find it
in any refernce books, nor do I find any for sale in online catalogs. Can someone please tell me the nomenclature of this flag and what was its intended purpose?

Here's a 1945 photo of a recently-liberated example. The GI is Robert Rossi of the 712th Tank Bn, attached to the 90th ID.
I still don't know what the heck it is!

It is the flag of the NSRL, a Nazi controlled Sports organization

Nationalsozialistischer Reichsbund fr Leibesbungen

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N...r_Leibes%C3%BCbungen

The canton patch is for the Turner bund, another organization with Nazi ties in the period, that also had a sporting element to it.It still exists today.

I have no information that there was any official ties between the two, there very well may have been. The Turner bund goes back further than the NSRL.In this case, they were combined in this area.

Bando, Nice sport association flag!! I had one a couple years ago with the corner patch but the pole rings had been cut, I'll have to find a pic of it for you, the patch was the same style as yours chain stiched on a black silk type back ground, is your patch double sided?

Thanks for the info guys-Now that you mention it, I think the patch is double-sided. The flag is stashed back in a footlocker, piled under others and right now it is highly inconvenient for me to take it out and re-examine it. Besides I'm going out of town for a week starting tomorrow. Regards, MB

Amazing. The Bahrenfelder Turnverein von 1898 e.V. is still in existence in the city of Hamburg. I doubt they would want it back, though. Smile

Hamburg is up in the North, American Troops did not make it to Hamburg. Strange that the flag was captured much further South...

Most of the printed ones will be war time produced.
