Here are the wartime HJ variations by Carl Eickhorn from 1939 to 1942.
Note that only the very late 1942 version (knife on the very right) has no squirrel mark on the blade!
Best greetings,
Herman

Thank you Stingray, the early Eickhorns will be for another time though.
Here are the scabbards of the wartime knifes: all are typical Eickhorn with the rounded tip.
Best greetings,
Herman

Love those Eicks, Herman.
Isn't there a version of the over shoulder 42 marked blade with only the squirrel on it?

janjan:
The second from the left has both the over shoulder squirrel and the RZM with date markings.
I thought that I had seen pictures of a version of this that only had the over shoulder squirrel with no RZM markings.

John,
The RZM markings on HJ knifes were introduced as early as 1935-1936.
So all the late HJ knifes were marked with RZM marking, it was imperative.
An example with only the "over the shoulder squirrel" marking would be highly suspicious...
Best regards,
Herman

Herman:
I hear you...
But, it looks to me like the TM was applied in two steps, the squirrel on the flat of the blade and the RZM on the ricasso. It is possible that one of the steps was missed. That is possibly why you see the version with the RZM marks but no squirrel.
Something in the back of my head tells me that I have seen pictures of the squirrel only TM on a HJ at some time and on some forum, probably this one since this is where I hang out the most.

Hello John,
Yes, a missed step during production is never excluded. In that case the knife you have seen would probably be a unique piece.
And, as you know, there are many early Eickhorn variations with just a squirrel and no RZM, but never the "over the shoulder" because it was only applied since 1941.
Best greetings,
Herman

So this is where all the nice HJ Eickhorns are. Any one got one to spare?
A question - was there any consistency with Eickhorn about the application of the motto. Did some variations always have one and others not?
all the best
James

James,
The motto was stopped on the regular HJ knife in 1938. All pre 1938 knifes (not just Eickhorn's) bear the motto. All blades made in 1939 or later don't have it anymore. This makes 1938 an interesting year of production: some knifes still have it others don't.
Best greetings,
Herman

Hello Scott,
No there are no exceptions to this rule: these RZM only knifes with motto were all made prior to 1939.
The most common RZM only HJ with motto is the RZM M7-51 (Anton Wingen Jr) and it exists in a 1936, 1937 and 1938 version.
Best regards,
Herman

So only pre 39 knives had the motto. Many thanks for the information gentlemen. Is there a reason why it was stopped?
Seriously though, has anyone got a spare pre 39 Eickhorn. I have been looking for ages.
Thanks very much gentlemen
James

James The knives were made under RZM price controls, and I'm going to make a guess that it was probably something of a cost cutting measure. Shortcuts also being seen in some other same period items from Solingen. FP
