A friend of mine acquired a nice Imperial navy sword. On the spine just above the hilt is a marking that depicts a crown over the letter W (I am assuming for Wilhelm)underneath the letter W are the numbers 05. Is representing the year 1905 or something else? any help appreciated .Thanks Geoff.

Your assumptions are all correct Sir.
Also, these marking indicate that it was an issued item as opposed to a private purchase piece as many other dress swords were.

Issued dress swords will also have unit marks too but not always, any more marks on yours?
