Yeah militaryman, lots can be (re)searched! See here and here for basics, go from there ... and search/read/reread topics in here. Its all in here. Well, lots anyway. Also, books! Some awesome books, like this, or, Johnsons series. Best book, I think still, is the book Me Fecit Solingen by Skipper Greenwade, but, more newer books have more info. Have lotsa fun!

Bye,
KR

Hey John as Karin mentioned these are great books to research but to answer your question about what they represent click on the link below and you will have alot to read and see. there are maps to click on that breaks down the Gau districts
There are descriptions of each Gau. the letters you see on the back of an SA dagger are abreviations for the Gau districts listed on the link below. These group marks represented where the daggers were sent to for the SA mann stationed in that area,, ( if i described that right) Hope this helps some,, best regards Larry

Hi John and Larry,

Reckon I took the question too lightly then Thanks for that link Larry! Als very intresting, is finding Handbuch der NSDAP-Gaue or snoop around here or here a bit. Its tuff this topic, the Gaue are formed/reformed/rereformed/combined/shifted/split-up a lot over years time. But fun to look into a bit. Any specific thing you need to find? Just being intrested ..

Bye

Dear fellow members, those letters called by the collectors "Gau marks" are in fact NOT, I repeat NOT "Gau" marks. They stand for SA Groups and SA Gruppe is NOT the same thing as NSDAP Gau. In some cases they "agree" with each other, but in many cases they do not. Let me give you some examples: Gau Nieder-Schlesien, Gau Schwaben, Gau Mecklenburg, Gau Moselland just to name a few. Which "gau markings", what letters stand for them then?
O.K., I know the term "gau markings" has been known and widely used for years by the collector community, but c'mon, it's never too late to start use correct terms. What happened to "everyday we learn something new in this hobby" attitude?

Ha ha, YES, thanks 777, I knew that actually, been off daggers lately, and surely needed the refresh-lesson.

I think John's question was answered by me and ivbaust some days ago here, including about the "gau mark" expression erroneous usage for these markings.

Regards,

Ricardo

Hello Adam, you are right as usually. So here it is again, repeating is mother of wisdom as we are saying in Czech.

SA-Gruppe is correct. But it is same thing as about nickel crossguards or alpaca...what is correct, he?

"Nickel" is not correct, but I don't see using it as a big sin - unlike some other widely misused names, at least it has something common with the correct name. In fact alpacca or nickel silver (aka.German silver, Argentann, paktong, new silver, nickel brass) is a copper alloy with nickel and sometimes zinc. The usual formulation is 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc.
