This beautiful piece is supposedly from the estate of a gauleiter. Measures about 9 1/2 " X 6 1/2" X 1" and is very heavy. No silver markings may be pewter. The inscription reads:

The Commander in Chief of Northern France and Belgium

In addition to a period ink pen a document also came with the set. If someone could translate, it would be appreciated.

Gordon, the document is translated as "In Remembrance / of the Contest / Schalke 4 against the Team of Soldiers / from the Area of the Military Commander / in Belgium and Northern France / on 22 October 1941 in Brussels / presented / by the Propaganda Detachment Belgium / signature of Major and Detachment Commander".

Checking Google, Schalke 04 was a famous German football team from the Rhine area that enjoyed great success in the 1930s and early 1940s. It still competes today.

I surmise this desk set was a commemorative gift to someone after the game. If it was to the Military Commander of Belgium and Northern France, I would think the engraving would have begun with "Dem".

Many thanks for the translation. I had no idea football was a popular German sport in the 1930s. Live and learn smile
