The insignia look fake. I would bet on the skull being so, not as sure about the eagle. The tassel looks too full, compared to those normally seen. Underneath the tassel, there should be a series of loops in black thread to secure the tassel to the fez, if desired. I would not buy this fez. There are all kinds of fezzes around and have been for years. A red one with a little age and fake insignia is easily converted to an "SS" one.

Gentlemen - a question if I may.
The Fez seems to be such an odd choice of headdress for the SS or for any modern Western soldier for that matter. Why was it introduced and when would it have been worn?
Many thanks
James

Don't know the full history, James, but it was worn by Muslim troops in the East. The red one was for dress and there was a gray one for the field. There are period photos depicting this headgear. As noted above, they are faked often by using a civilian fez, of which there are many from a variety of countries. Reproduction insignia complete the deception.

I don't like it either.
Could be a real fez though. the value of loose SS insignia surpassed the value of the complete fez, so many fez's were bought up, and stripped for profit. leaving naked fez's around. I have seen some of these "upgraded" and sold with fake metal cap insignia as "officers" versions...
The Muslim use of the fez comes from their prayer custom of facing Mecca and lying prostrate and touching their palms, knees, toes, and their bare forehead on the ground.

The infamous 13th Waffen SS division,,"Handschar" wore these fezs. During the Second World War in Yugoslavia, as with the Catholic Church in Croatia, many Muslim clerics in Bosnia and Kosovo were willing accomplices in the genocide of the nations Serbian, Jewish and Roma population. From 1941 until 1945, the Nazi-installed regime of Ante Pavelic in Croatia carried out some of the most horrific crimes of the Holocaust (known as the Porajmos by the Roma), killing over 800,000 Yugoslav citizens - 750,000 Serbs, 60,000 Jews and 26,000 Roma. In these crimes, they were helped by Muslim fundamentalists in Bosnia and Kosovo who were openly supported by the Palestinian Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Hajj Amin al-Husseini. A notorious anti-Semite, he openly encouraged Muslims to join Nazi units that would be later implicated in genocide and crimes against humanity - the infamous Hanjar (or Handschar) 13th Waffen SS division. One of these crimes was the The Massacre at Koritska Jama Gorge, in Bosnia during 1941. The Nazi's also established a puppet state in Serbia under General Milan Nedic, who along with the Cetniks also particapated in the Holocaust in wartime Croatia (which included Bosnia) and Serbia. heres the link into this fanatical SS units history. http://www.fantompowa.net/Flame/yugoslavia_collaboration.htm
