I believe it's a Pack#544 on account of the closed wing eagle but,regardless,a really nice sword and an excellent choice.

Very nice Pack Wehrmacht pattern #544. The finish is not gold plating as in electroplating. It was painted with an amalgam of mercury and gold which was then fired to burn off the mercury and left the gold finish. A highly toxic process. I think the proper term is "Mercury gilt".

(sorry) The sword more than likely was electroplated.. Looking at the many period catalogs I have fire gilt was a more expensive option or not offered at all.. Most 3rd Reich swords are not fire gilt. Fire gilt is much more common on the Imperial swords...
