I did not know where else to place this question so I will put it here does anyone one know if the Aberdeen proving ground in Maryland is still open...and is it easy to get to. I kinda know it is off of Rt95 but its been 40 years since i been there. can someone tell me if it is still open to the public and maybe get some directions off of Rt 95 South. I would like to take my son there. Alot of WW2 History there if you were never there before. I would like to go again. Thanks larry

Here's a LINK to a virtual tour. Here is a LINK to information on the museum and it's location. According to the article, it closed September 2010 to be relocated.

All of the armor collection is in the process of being moved. "Anzio Annie" just got disassembled and was on the road last week. A good friend of mine is involved with the relocation of the collection. Regards, Ross Kelbaugh www.ssdaggers.com

Hi Ross ,, Wow sounds like bad news ,, I was looking forward to going down there. Where is all the armor going to be displayed now? Is the whole collection going to Washington DC ?? Best regards Larry

According to the article, they are building an indoor museum for all the armor at Fort Lee (Petersburg Virginia).

Hi Vern the site that you posted for me has alot of information and I got lost in the armored section and never really had a chance to explore the rest of it. It must be a heavy undertaking to load these heavy vehicles onto a flat bed ( I guess ) but I dont think any of the vintage WW2 ones are driveable to go onto a flat bed. I have seen professional "riggers" put on and off giant printing presses with a giant forklift in sections but tanks weigh alot more than that and i am curious on how they will do it. Maybe by a heavy crane? Larry

No problem. It would take about 30 minutes to set up and 10 minutes to lift the tank if you have the right gear.
The M88 tank retriever (Recovery Vehicle) is what you need. Two of them. I have seen two of them lift an M60 high enough for a trailer to be backed under it in 1965.

Thanks Dave cool photos,, as a crane vehicle itself it is very intimidating. This must be the heavy of heavies because of the weight needed to lift other armored vehicles.
