Not certain, but think this is a police honor cup. No engraving other than the NAZI eagle. Cup meaures about 16 inches high and 8 1/2 inches wide. I would guess that the lack of engraving suggests the cup was never presented.

Alternatively, one might suggest that the lack of an inscription is the result of the recent fabricator's lack of knowledge of German? Sorry to be a doubting Thomas, but from period documentation official presentations of the police tended away from metal/precious metal objects towards non-strategic materials. Seriously, the late 1930s saw local police precincts collecting their "awards" and turning them in during official scrap drives. So that is why I would initially doubt the authenticity of your piece.

From the photos, it would appear that the eagle attached to the side is a brass casting of a shako eagle. Is it brazed to the body of the urn? Are there any manufacturing marks under the base?

There are no manufacturing marks on the base. I also disagree with you as this being a "recent" fabrication. Note the huge amount of crud on the base. This accumulation did not happen overnight but took many years.

I have also seen over the years a number of honor cups without inscriptions. These are obviousl pieces "liberated" by vets from stores or supply houses.

I cannot swear this is an original but I'm inclined to think that it is. At any rate, the price was reasonable and it makes a nice accent piece to my collection.

By recent fabrication, I was referring to the addition of the police eagle casting, not the entire urn. If there are no identifying marks on it, can you tell of what material the urn is made? And what is the police eagle made of and how is it attached.

Your satisfaction with the price and authenticity is the only thing that matters. Perhaps it was intended to be a funerary urn.

I'll admit I'm not a Police buff,,but,, That being cast on to the piece suggests there's be more than one. A one of a kind piece would probably just have the Police eagle engraved on the one side and dedication on other..

A quick short cut [I know it doesn't prove much!] that sometimes works.. Get a thread gage and remove that bottom nut. If s.a.e. threads its a fugazy. At least if it had metric threads it would be 'one down'...

Gaspare, by casting I was referring to the eagle being a casting (brass or otherwise) of an original aluminum shako eagle. It appears to be the wrong material to be an original shako eagle. I did not mean that the entire body of the urn was cast with the eagle on it.

Your suggestion regarding the issue of metric threads is good. Also, it appears that at least the base of the urn is ferrous metal as it displays rust corrosion on the underside.

I can't comment on the attached eagle. But just to clarify your above statement. Are you saying that the cup shown, is a known official design for police honor cups that you've observed with and without presentation? Because if not, all we see is a very nice cup with an attached eagle. I as well have seen many cups/goblets of different designs and styles from many periods and organizations, some with and w/o presentations and attachments. But just because we see cups with attachments from an organization, doesn't necessarily make them honor cups or even official. If there is no presentation, then we really don't know what the intended purpose is. It's been my experience that if a cup doesn't state honor cup or honor whatever,then it's not.
