Actually, I think I solved the mystery... some sent me a note asking if this hat came from a SMOKERS home. I knew the couple that I got it from smoked in their garage (since I saw them do it) so I called them. The vet had this hat in his den for the last 60+ years where he smoked.

The gold hue is Nicotine stains... What I think it is now is just a standard LUFT officers cap. The silver had turned gold with the smoke.

If it was a generals cap it should have the gold braid as well as a more elaberate eagle perhaps bullion??

Still its a good $400-500 cap I think... what do yall think since Im not much of a hat guy and will probably put in the for sale section once I get a good gauge of the value.

Sepp, I have seen these sheilds before, and if it's real, which from the looks is, it's an expensive piece of metal!

disboo100, very nice find!!!! Although the smoker thing sounds good, I have never seen cloth get such an even hugh to it from smoke. You have a good hat there .

Neither have I and I smoke too. The waffenfarbe would have gotten discolored as well!

I found some pictures of the plate in one of my Sniper books. Since the MG would be a good target for a sniper they came up with this plate.. Heavy bugger.. But I suppose a strong neck is better than a bullet in your forehead. I cant see any rifle of the time unless it was a BOYS .50 cal anti TANK round that would go through both the plate and the helmet.

From what Ive come up with that plate and helmet is in the 2500-3000 range to the right buyer. Granted I dont really collect WW1 or Helmets HAHA

Is that a somewhat accurate guess from what you all have seen?

I found no prices for that extra helmet armor which is called a "Stirnpanzer" but I have a link here for an article which describes the item: http://www.worldwar1.com/sfgstal.htm

Be very careful when buying a helmet accoutrement like this. There are companies on the internet where you can buy new ones, and some time outside in the yard will make a new one of these look very old and salty.

Hi your overseas cap is actually and basic enlisted mans cap with non standard (non textbook) braid added...when this was done is anyone's guess...It might be a period upgrade but it is a low grade em cap with a non standard piping upgrade..so it doesn't even have the normal braid as seen on field made examples...further to what Craig has stated...these shields are well faked...have it checked out and I do not like the appearance of the leather strap and buckle from the pictures.I am not saying that there is anything wrong with it but these are rare and even rarer with the original strap attached...cheers, Ryan

P.S. the insignia has toned nicely and evenly with "nicotine patina"? however, from the pics the braid has no patina and stands out brilliantly in the pics as if "illuminated" also insignia is hand stitched which, of itself means nothing but the majority of these caps were de nazified at the end of hostilities. Originally most were zig zag machine embroidered like SS examples and not through the lining (done during construction phase.
