Never tried to shoulder down a blade to repeen the tang. Anyone tried this with a dress saber?

I have not Tom. But, to extend the tang to have something available to peen you would almost have to do this. You would also probably have to re-shape and shave the tang in order to make the grip tight without breaking the grip. It probably would not be very noticeable if you had a leather buffer pad to cover up the grinding. As long as you did not disturb the maker logo or put it up too high it would be hard to tell without close inspection I suspect. Of course the ricasso would be shorter by necessity. I would hesitate to do it on an expensive sword as it could ruin the value. On a common sword, it would probably be an improvement.

George- for sure. Depending on how much one was to shoulder down the blade, issues of fit could be significant. If someone were to minimally shoulder it, say 1/4", I suspect one may be able to get away without tang resize and grip fitting.

Methods such as external additions to the tang are labor intensive, and would probably effect the temper of the tang in general.

I have no project pieces at this time, but was curious to see what if any experience other saber afficionados have had with this method. Generally speaking, I avoid pieces which require any and all tange work. It's typically just not worth the effort, time and so forth.
