I know there are "enhanced" versions of this helmet around. My question is about the RZM and SS stampings on the inside of the skirt. Are there authentic variations of these? Is there a sure way to spot the real ones from the later added ones? Thanks.

The first thing to look for on the RZM Helmet are the ripples on the rear skirt. These are caused by the die in the drawing process. All the RZM Helmets that I have and have had all have these same ripples. Starting off with the correct shell gets you the majority of the way there. I have seen some variations as well as double strikes that have 2 stampings of the Runes and RZM.

Thanks, Rich. Are there any variations in the SS stamp? Most I have seen show the runes well inside the circle. On one I saw recently, the runes almost touched the circle and looked closer together than on the other stamps. Wondered if it is a known repro or just a variant.

Can you show a picture of the rear skirt of the helmet? Are the ripples present?

I have a photo of the skirt, but need to work with it to get the proper detail. I don't see wrinkles yet. I think this helmet is suspicious, but I don't know that much about them.

If there are no wrinkles, I would be very suspicious. The reproductions that have been made very seldom have the correct RZM SS Helmet Shell.

Thanks, Rich. I am trying to post photos here. I enlarged one of the rear skirt and I can see no wrinkles. Am also trying to post better pic's of the SS stamp and of the RZM stamp.

It's interesting to note the stamps appear to have no paint in them, possibly indicating the stamping took place after the helmet was painted. I don't know what procedure was originally used, but it would seem the stamping would take place first, then the paint.

Thanks to a member, I was placed in contact with a true expert on early German helmets. He confirmed the helmet is bogus in more ways than one. For possible future reference, he noted the stampings are fake.

From your photo shown, there are no wrinkles present in the skirt. Not a good sign.
Also, the RZM & SS Runes are stamped into the blank before drawing.

IT's not just the stamping that makes these helmets different,
The location on the air vent lugs and the positioning of the rivits...
If you know what you are looking for, you will probably know one, before you pick it up and look inside ...
