The feather in the hat suggests Italian to me.

Mananero,

At first I thought it couldn't be an Italian uniform, neither Alpini nor Bersagliere. I went through an old Kntel's, "Handbuch der Uniformkunde," which covers all the European country's uniforms from the Napoleanic War up to WWII. I even called a friend who knows a bit more about Italian uniforms and he thought it might be Alpini artillery, but I didn't think that was it either..? Then I went back to the Kntel's and there he was in a back row of line illustrations, an Italian Alpenjger or Alpini from the 1890 decade. He has that same distinctive, elongated Homburg-type hat with the same vertical feather. So, I think that's the area that I'd concentrate on for further details and possibly some additional photos?

If you find out any more could you let us know?

Ciao! Cool

Bill

I own it. I will take it apart and see what is on the backside. Was in a general auction with no help from the other items in the lot.

The only thing on the back of the photo was a pencil mark of a w or m depends on how you look at it. I thought he was interesting.
