Knots that have the spiral insert to the ball are the only knots accepted as being Navy by the majority of collectors. This is because most Navy daggers obtained directly from vets and having knots that are "frozen" in place have this spiral. Also, Imperial Navy knots have the spiral.
All silver bullion knots that I know of have the spiral and all of these are Navy for sure.
But--some Army daggers can be found with the aluminum version with the spiral--so--possibly not correct even though they may be original to the piece. Also, some Navy daggers can be found with knots without the spiral-again, possibly not correct but original to the piece. Adding to this is the fact that Navy knots are usually a bit longer than Army knots and some knots without the spiral are indeed longer.
Also-there is no catalog or regulation covering this aspect that I know of
Nylon knots can be found in all lengths
I know of no spiral insert short knots
From what I can see your knot appears original.
I think that covers everything we know. Conclusion is that most would rather have the spiral version for their Navy daggers.

I have only had one original navy water resistant knot. I believe the correct name for the material was celleon. This did have the spiral insert and was a light golden hue. I have seen daggers with other types and most frequently they have a thicker cord. I have always suspected them to be post war additions & would not buy one myself.
To answer you question there would be no reason for any other dagger to have a water resistant knot and if there were it would not be correct in my opinion.
War is when your government tells you who the enemy is. Revolution is when you figure it out for yourself.

Sorry-but period examples do exist. The water resistant idea has no basis in fact IMO. Many pieces of insignia were made of this nylonish material in the war years. Tarnish resistant is more likely the idea.
